JASON SZENES\/ NY POST<\/p>\n<p>The eight-month break proved to be exactly what she needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her story is an example of the balance that athletes are trying to strike in terms of the rigors that come with professional sports while being mindful of their mental well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was never that athlete who performed well from overtraining or constantly being at tournaments and only having work to look forward to,\u201d Anisimova said. \u201cI\u2019ve always been someone who needs to have a good balance and needs to go home and recharge my batteries, especially my mental energy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd after doing that, I feel like I was able to finally achieve the results that I wanted. Especially last year, I had such a great year. Apart from the results that I had, I was also having a lot of fun off of the court, and I think that\u2019s what made it so successful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since she returned to the sport in 2024, Anisimova has skyrocketed in the WTA rankings, reaching a career-best World No. 3 ranking in January, and entering this year\u2019s U.S. Open No. 10 on the WTA rankings. <\/p>\n<p>Amanda Anisimova hits a backhand during her 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic during the WTA 1000 National Bank Open on Aug. 6, 2026, in Toronto. Anadolu via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Last year she reached consecutive Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. She did not win a game against Iga Swiatek at the All England Club but <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/26\/sports\/amanda-anisimova-has-new-perspective-at-us-open-after-mental-health-journey\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fought Aryna Sabalenka for two tough sets at Flushing Meadows before succumbing. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anisimova is hoping her story can show others the benefits of taking a break to put themselves first. <\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old New Jersey native has partnered with Pure Leaf Iced Tea to share her story during the two weeks of the U.S. Open, which includes a fan activation by the drink brand in Bryant Park on Sept. 2.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the campaign is to help promote the idea of taking time to reset and recharge in everyday life, with Anisimova\u2019s story showing just how beneficial that can be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love their message and I feel like it\u2019s something that really resonates with me,\u201d Anisimova said. \u201cIs how important it is to take breaks and to reset and recharge yourself, and I feel like we\u2019re both very aligned on that message. She was closed off growing up and would not talk about the struggles that come along with being a talented athlete.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never did well under those circumstances, or at least not long term, I feel like now that I\u2019m able to be more myself and talk about my experiences and be honest, I feel like I can connect to people a lot easier,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like I\u2019m more free and I get to just be myself. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like that\u2019s a very cathartic experience, especially as an athlete. We deal with so many emotions on and off of the court\u2026 I\u2019m always trying to be as honest as I can in my experiences and what I go through, and I feel like it\u2019s so important. If it can just help one person, then that makes me incredibly happy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Anisimova for Pure Leaf Pure Leaf<\/p>\n<p>That isn\u2019t to say Anisimova isn\u2019t eager to get that first Grand Slam title under her belt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Open is Anisimova\u2019s favorite tournament, but last year\u2019s finals run was the first time she advanced past the third round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very eager and motivated because I didn\u2019t really achieve everything I would have wanted in terms of winning a Grand Slam, so I\u2019m still working my way there and trying to get there,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m obviously flooded with a lot of memories from last year and really looking forward to competing here.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"There\u2019s a noticeable difference between Amanda Anisimova in 2023 and now.
