If the Northern Lights are visible, it will be during nighttime hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The agency currently forecasts the Kp index, a measure of global geomagnetic activity, to potentially reach 5.67\u2014considered a high amount compared to the normal 0 to 2 on the index\u2014within its G2 category.<\/p>\n<p>Where Could the Northern Lights Be Visible?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Northern Lights, or <a data-ylk=\"slk:aurora borealis;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/topic\/aurora-borealis\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">aurora borealis<\/a>, are colorful displays in the night sky caused when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere. Charged particles from the sun are guided by Earth&#8217;s magnetic field toward these high-latitude regions, forming an &#8220;auroral oval&#8221; around the poles. During stronger geomagnetic storms, that oval expands farther south, allowing auroras to become visible across more of the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That means the best prospects for visibility are likely to be across Alaska, Canada and the northern tier of the contiguous U.S., including parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, and possibly northern New England.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Skywatchers will also need clear, dark skies away from significant light pollution. If the two arrive together, their combined effects could intensify geomagnetic activity and improve the chances of seeing the much-coveted Northern Lights.<\/p>\n<p>What Is a Solar Flare?<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A solar flare is an intense explosion of radiation released when magnetic energy stored in the sun&#8217;s atmosphere is suddenly unleashed.\u00a0<a data-ylk=\"slk:NASA explains;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;link&quot;,&quot;yLinkElementType&quot;:&quot;article_link&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/sun\/solar-storms-and-flares\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">NASA explains<\/a>\u00a0that flares are classified as A, B, C, M and X, with each category representing roughly a tenfold increase in intensity.
