{"id":828005,"date":"2026-08-27T22:12:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T22:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/828005\/"},"modified":"2026-08-27T22:12:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T22:12:32","slug":"pmos-in-what-cases-might-glp-1s-aid-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/828005\/","title":{"rendered":"PMOS: In what cases might GLP-1s aid treatment?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thompson expanded on that point, noting that \u201cnot all patients with PMOS are overweight and in fact there is a phenotype of thin patients who do not neatly fit into the classic presentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPMOS is a spectrum of symptoms and for patients who are affected at the milder end of the spectrum diet and lifestyle interventions may be enough to be helpful in managing their condition,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n<p>Both Thompson and Vasilev stressed that only individuals with both overweight or obesity and PMOS are the most likely to benefit from a GLP-1 treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe strongest data [regarding GLP-1s for PMOS] are in overweight\/obese women,\u201d Vasilev reiterated.<\/p>\n<p>He also emphasized that there are several situations in which individuals with PMOS who might otherwise benefit from GLP-1 treatment would be best advised to try a different route.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, he said, anyone looking to conceive should avoid GLP-1s. These drugs \u201care \u2018teratogenicity-concern\u2019 agents, which means that they must be stopped before conception,\u201d said Vasilev.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major caveat in a population where many patients are actively seeking fertility; contraception and preconception discontinuation counseling are required,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n<p>He also outlined the importance of gastrointestinal adverse effects such as nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, that can come with GLP-1 use. These adverse effects \u201care common and should not be taken lightly,\u201d cautioned Vasilev.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Moreoever, \u201ctirzepatide\u2019s delayed gastric emptying can <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40906565\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reduce oral contraceptive efficacy<\/a>, which is relevant when pregnancy prevention matters,\u201d he told us, adding that \u201cthis represents a big caution flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Vasilev explained that since there is currently no definitive proof that GLP-1s are a potent treatment for PMOS due to \u201clow to very low\u201d certainty evidence derived from \u201csmall and heterogeneous\u201d clinical trials, other treatments remain the preferred first-line of action.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, he said:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-healthline-quote-body\">\u201cGuideline positioning still focus[es] on lifestyle optimization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/322629\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">combined oral contraceptives<\/a> for menstrual\/androgenic symptoms, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/metformin-oral-tablet\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">metformin<\/a> for metabolic features; GLP-1 RAs are not [an] established first-line [treatment for PMOS].
