\n The US military used a laser in southern Texas\u2019 Rio Grande Valley to shoot down three Mexican drug cartel drones this week near the US-Mexico border, US officials said on Thursday.\n <\/p>\n
\n The North American Aerospace Defense Command and US Northern Command said in a statement that the operation took place late Tuesday and early Wednesday and used the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser.\n <\/p>\n
\n The military did not give the precise location of the strikes nor make clear whether it took place over US or Mexican territory. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said any unilateral US action on Mexican soil would be a grave breach of her country\u2019s sovereignty.\n <\/p>\n
\n The military said the drones posed \u201ca physical threat\u201d to US military and US Customs and Border Protection personnel.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cCartel networks are increasingly employing unmanned aircraft systems to facilitate illicit human-smuggling and actively spy on our personnel and law enforcement partners,\u201d Major General Curtis Taylor, the commander of Joint Task Force\u2013Southern Border, said in a statement.\n <\/p>\n
\n The announcement comes as US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration seeks to clamp down on immigration<\/a> and cartels<\/a>, seeking to fulfill promises from his 2024 presidential campaign.\n <\/p>\n \n Since its establishment in 2025, the border task force has conducted tens of thousands of detection and monitoring patrols and thousands of observation flights, the task force said.\n <\/p>\n \n The military did not specify the manufacturer of the laser system.\n <\/p>\n \n AeroVironment Inc delivered its first two multi-purpose high-energy lasers to the US Army last summer. The US Army has previously deployed<\/a> AeroVironment Inc\u2019s LOCUST system. The deployment of that system led to a seven-hour airspace shutdown near Texas\u2019 El Paso International Airport earlier this year.\n <\/p>\n \n In February, the military accidentally shot down<\/a> a US government drone using a laser-based anti-drone system, congressional aides told Reuters at the time.\n <\/p>\n
