GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKRC) \u2014 West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Green Township, marking the first reported detection of the virus within Hamilton County Public Health’s jurisdiction this year.<\/p>\n
Hamilton County Public Health said the virus was found in a mosquito sample collected July 30. The health department did not identify the specific location in Green Township where the mosquitoes were trapped.<\/p>\n
There are currently no confirmed or probable human cases of West Nile virus in Hamilton County Public Health’s jurisdiction, officials said.<\/p>\n
The health department’s jurisdiction does not include Cincinnati, Norwood or Springdale.<\/p>\n
Beginning Thursday, environmental health specialists will treat standing bodies of water in the affected area with larvicide. Officials may also visit or speak with residents in the area.<\/p>\n
Hamilton County Public Health is encouraging residents to follow its \u201cDrain, Dunk, Protect\u201d approach to reduce mosquito populations and lower the risk of exposure.<\/p>\n
Drain: Eliminate standing water around homes, including water in pools, birdbaths, toys, playsets, open containers, wheelbarrows, old tires and gutters.Dunk: Use mosquito larvicide, commonly called mosquito \u201cdunks,\u201d in standing water that cannot be drained.Protect: Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito activity around dusk and dawn, particularly in humid or wooded areas.
