New Orleans is chock full of historic buildings, iconic architecture and homes with old bones that can be restored to preserve history while adding touches for modern living.<\/p>\n

Here are three recent homes we featured recently, plus the people who live in them.<\/p>\n

A wife who restored a Gentilly Terrace home with her late husband<\/p>\n

A teenager who helped transform a home her family bought in the Marigny<\/p>\n

A French Quarter man with a maximalist vision for his quaint, cool apartment<\/p>\n

A restored Craftsman in Gentilly Terrace<\/p>\n

Kelly Hamilton\u2019s Gentilly Terrace home, built in 1925, is a very fine example of California Craftsman architecture.<\/p>\n

When Kelly Hamilton and her late husband, Mike, purchased a 1926 Craftsman in 2006, the couple began a yearslong process of restoring and renovating the home to keep its charm with nods to the West Coast design style, something rarely seen in New Orleans architecture. Aside from Mike\u2019s custom woodwork and other upgrades, the couple added a swimming pool that overlooks the sunroom and kitchen in 2008.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told Mike I would rather have a pool note than a car note,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n

Teen revives Marigny shotgun<\/p>\n

Isabella Walker chose this color palette for the home she renovated in the Faubourg Marigny. The earth tones harmonize well with the historic Craftsman architecture. The Craftsman-style shotgun single was built in 1900.<\/p>\n

Isabella Walker\u2019s family members pooled their money to buy a 1900s Craftsman shotgun single in the Faubourg Marigny. The place was in bad shape, its inherit gifts buried under decades of paint, linoleum and bad decisions.<\/p>\n

Isabella did the research and ground work and transformed this family home.<\/p>\n

A bold French Quarter bungalow<\/p>\n

Ed Rhew\u2019s French Quarter apartment has all its original millwork, including the multipaned transoms above the interior doorways. The painting to the left (bottom) is by John Matla, the one above is by a friend and the one on the wall to the right was purchased while traveling. It was painted by an art student.<\/p>\n

Art, textiles and boldness create true magic in Ed Rhew\u2019s 750-square-foot French Quarter townhouse built in 1833.<\/p>\n

He has a thing for upholstered armchairs, fitting nine into his space, all of which merge through Rhew\u2019s love of color, a palette that trends to warm shades of orange, taupe, rich brown and ochre but leaves room for others.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want comfortable, stylish chairs,\u201d he said. \u201cI also need a table for a book and a drink. Everywhere you sit in my apartment, there is such a setup at arm\u2019s reach. I like to have people over for drinks. I don\u2019t host many dinner parties. My dining table only seats two.\u201d<\/p>\n
