{"id":828591,"date":"2026-08-28T11:32:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-28T11:32:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/828591\/"},"modified":"2026-08-28T11:32:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-28T11:32:09","slug":"more-chinese-regions-are-raising-minimum-wages-but-will-it-help-boost-consumption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/828591\/","title":{"rendered":"More Chinese regions are raising minimum wages, but will it help boost consumption?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">As more Chinese provincial-level regions raise minimum wages, economists say the increases could encourage lower-income workers to spend more, but were unlikely to significantly boost consumption or the broader economy and could add to the cost burdens faced by smaller firms.<\/p>\n<p>The provinces of Guangdong and Shanxi and the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3295043\/chinas-local-governments-raise-minimum-wages-boost-consumption?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region<\/a> announced this month that wage increases of around 10 per cent or more would be implemented later this year. The increases far outpace their rates of gross domestic product growth last year \u2013 which ranged between 3.9 per cent and 5.5 per cent \u2013 and are double 2025\u2019s national GDP growth rate.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Sheana Yue, an economist at Oxford Economics, described the moves as \u201cpart of a broader rebalancing towards household income\u201d. The adjustments were \u201ctargeted at lower-income workers, who tend to have a relatively high propensity to consume\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Guangdong has planned the largest increase, with its minimum monthly wage to be 2,040 yuan (US$304) from next month \u2013 16.6 per cent higher than at the start of this year.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Resource-rich Shanxi and the far-western region of Xinjiang followed, with both planning to raise their monthly wage floors by about 10.3 per cent from October.
