\n\tThe future of Aerosmith<\/a> is extremely uncertain due to Steven Tyler\u2019s injured larynx, but that isn\u2019t stopping guitarist Joe Perry<\/a> from keeping the band\u2019s music alive on the road. A new iteration of the Joe Perry Project \u2014 featuring Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford, Black Crowes<\/a> frontman Chris Robinson, and Stone Temple Pilots<\/a> bassist Robert DeLeo \u2014 kicked off their inaugural tour Wednesday evening at the Hard Rock Event Center in Tampa, Florida.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tThe set is heavy on Aerosmith classics like \u201cSame Old Song and Dance,\u201d \u201cMama Kin,\u201d \u201cLast Child,\u201d and \u201cDraw the Line,\u201d but it also dips into the Black Crowes catalog for \u201cTwice as Hard\u201d and \u201cJealous Again,\u201d and the STP library for \u201cVasoline\u201d and \u201cInterstate Love Song.\u201d (STP drummer Eric Kretz was originally on board for the tour, but he dropped out at the last minute due to a \u201cfamily emergency.\u201d He was replaced by veteran Joe Perry Project drummer Jason Sutter. The band is rounded out by touring Aerosmith keyboardist Buck Johnson.)<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tFor an idea of what this classic rock mashup band sounds like, check out their rendition of \u201cInterstate Love Song.\u201d It\u2019s a slow, bluesy take that gives everyone onstage a moment to shine. \u201cI think you know this one,\u201d Robinson tells the audience before they kick it off. \u201cFrom the mind of Mr. Robert DeLeo.\u201d For the Aerosmith tunes, they stuck closer to the original arrangements, including the grand finale, \u201cWalk This Way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tFor now, there are only 10 Joe Perry Project shows on the books. Shortly after it ends with a slot opening for the Who at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 17, Robinson is returning to his day job with the Black Crowes. DeLeo, meanwhile, has dates of his own to play with Stone Temple Pilots.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tAerosmith have been inactive ever since Tyler\u2019s larynx injury ended the band\u2019s 2023 Peace Out\u2026Farewell Tour<\/a> after a mere three concerts. Tyler recovered well enough in this past February to play a handful of songs with Perry at a Los Angeles benefit concert for his charity Janie\u2019s Fund.<\/a> He also performed \u201cWalk This Way\u201d and \u201cTrain Kept A-Rollin\u201d at Black Sabbath\u2019s Back to the Beginning concert in July, and he showed no signs of any vocal damage, leading many fans to hope that Aerosmith could possibly return in some form.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a recent interview with WBUR,<\/a> however, Perry said an Aerosmith tour remains unlikely. \u201cHe just doesn\u2019t want to tour, and he can\u2019t tour. It\u2019s tough,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not sure I would want to go out and book another 40-city tour. It\u2019s a long way to the top and staying there takes it out of you, especially an Aerosmith tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA Las Vegas residency is likely off the table as well. \u201cI\u2019ll never say never, but I wouldn\u2019t bet on it \u2014 no pun intended,\u201d Perry said. \u201cYou really have to want to be out there and we\u2019re all at that point of: How do you want to live? How do you want to spend the next however long you\u2019ve got?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhat is possible, however, is a Back to the Beginning-style farewell concert where Aerosmith can play together one last time, and end the band on a joyful note. \u201cI know there\u2019s gotta be at least another Aerosmith gig, and I\u2019m not looking forward to putting the setlist together for that one,\u201d Perry told Eddie Trunk in June. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know, man. We\u2019ll just have to see.\u201d<\/p>\n
