California DOJ investigates fatal police shooting of unarmed person in Lathrop<\/p>\n
LATHROP, Calif. \u2014<\/p>\n
One person died after at least one Lathrop Police Department officer fired their gun at an unarmed person in a San Joaquin County neighborhood, the California Department of Justice said Friday.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Rob Bonta said the DOJ is conducting its own independent investigation and review of a police shooting that “resulted in the death of one individual.” State law requires the DOJ to investigate and review police shootings involving unarmed civilians. <\/p>\n
The shooting happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday on Pamela Court and Chandra Way after a report of a domestic violence situation. It’s in a neighborhood east of Interstate 5 and south of J Street.<\/p>\n
The shooting happened as officers contacted the people involved in the situation, police said. Police did not explain why gunfire broke out or how many officers fired their weapons. <\/p>\n
Lathrop police did say on Friday that officers provided medical aid to the person who was shot, who later died at the hospital. No officers were hurt. <\/p>\n
The identity of the person killed was not released.<\/p>\n
“Consistent with standard procedure for this type of officer-involved shooting, the Lathrop Police Department requested that the California Department of Justice conduct an investigation,” Lathrop police said in a statement. <\/p>\n
Lathrop Police Chief Stephen Sealy said a family member inside of the home made the 911 call.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe understand that this is a traumatic experience for the family members, for the officers and the community at large. So, when these incidents occur, we make sure that there’s a full, detailed investigation and all the procedures and protocols are being followed at this time. And once that information is appropriate to release, we will share the findings,\u201d Sealy said.<\/p>\n
KCRA 3 asked Sealey what led up to the shooting and why officers didn\u2019t use a less lethal option if the person was unarmed.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s an ongoing investigation through the Department of Justice. So, at this point in time, I cannot confirm or speculate on the actions taken during this incident \u2014 the actions of the subject or the officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the department is committed to transparency. He confirmed that the officers involved in this incident were wearing body cameras. Generally, the department has 45 days to release that video footage. Sealy said they will coordinate with the DOJ on when the video gets released.<\/p>\n
KCRA 3 spoke on the phone with a family member of the person killed. She said the person killed is a man.<\/p>\n
She said police arrived and separated the two people involved. That\u2019s when she said the shooting happened.<\/p>\n
She said her family is still trying to figure out why the shooting happened and why a less lethal option wasn\u2019t used. She also said a child was inside of the house at the time of the shooting.<\/p>\n
At least 10 people wearing suits arrived and entered the crime scene at around 12:30 a.m. Friday, according to KCRA 3’s Andres Valle, who was at the scene. <\/p>\n
A large white command center truck was also visible as officers investigated.<\/p>\n
Police initially blocked off Chandra Way between Lottie Way and Warfield Road, but by 12:15 a.m. Friday, officers reopened Chandra Way and moved the crime scene tape up to Pamela Court. <\/p>\n
KCRA 3’s Melanie Wingo observed police clear the scene around 4:30 a.m. Friday. Officers investigated the area for about 11 hours overall.<\/p>\n
The Lathrop Police Department is conducting its own investigation into the shooting, which is protocol whenever an officer fires their service weapon.<\/p>\n
Once the DOJ completes its separate investigation, it will turn over its findings to its Special Prosecutions Section. <\/p>\n
