French basketball player Julie Tetart<\/a> could potentially make WNBA history after reports claimed she has declared for the 2027 Draft, although Tetart herself has not yet confirmed that step.<\/p>\n

The transgender Ligue 2 player has previously made no secret of what reaching the WNBA would mean to her.<\/p>\n

“It’s a childhood dream,” Tetart <\/a>said earlier in August when discussing the possibility.<\/p>\n

That deserves to be treated as the ambition of a basketball player rather than reduced to culture war ammunition.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the conversation has already become tangled up with former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom’s far more provocative decision to announce his own \u2018intention\u2019 to enter the draft.<\/p>\n

Julie Tetart’s WNBA ambition sparks huge debate<\/p>\n

Reaction online was immediate after reports of Tetart’s possible declaration emerged.<\/p>\n

“Julie Tetart vs Enes Kanter will Transcend the WNBA!” one basketball observer wrote.<\/p>\n

Another response captured the uncertainty more accurately: “Declaring for the draft is one thing; getting drafted is also another altogether. Players go undrafted all the time. No guarantee he\/she gets a spot.”<\/p>\n

The WNBA’s CBA states that “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA,” but the agreement doesn’t separately define transgender eligibility.<\/p>\n

That leaves an important and sensitive question for the league to address with considerably more care than much of the online shouting surrounding it.<\/p>\n

Enes Kanter’s stunt risks overshadowing real issue<\/p>\n

Kanter’s intervention has been harder to treat as a genuine basketball pursuit. After reports suggested he and Royce White had been deemed ineligible, Kanter called them “fake news” and said he would “drop everything” if the WNBA explicitly defined women as “biological females.”<\/p>\n

That framing risks turning Tetart and transgender athletes generally into props for a political argument rather than people trying to participate in sport.<\/p>\n

There is also no evidence that Tetart represents some imminent threat to Caitlin Clark or any other WNBA player. She hasn’t been drafted, hasn’t secured a roster place and hasn’t even publicly confirmed the reported declaration.<\/p>\n

The league does need clear eligibility rules, and competitive fairness deserves serious discussion.<\/p>\n

But inclusion, dignity and empathy belong in that conversation too.
