Here&#8217;s how NASA&#8217;s flagship observatory will open up the universe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-836bdc48-9fe0-11f1-bf7d-7729b93bd89d\">NASA&#8217;s next big space telescope has left Earth, but it&#8217;s not ready to start observing the heavens just yet.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope<\/a> launched yesterday (Aug. 30), riding a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> Falcon Heavy rocket <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-roman-space-telescope-launch-success-on-a-spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-spectacular-launch-video\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-roman-space-telescope-launch-success-on-a-spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-spectacular-launch-video\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/nasa-roman-space-telescope-launch-success-on-a-spacex-falcon-heavy-rocket-spectacular-launch-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">into the heavens<\/a>. Astronomers are very excited about Roman, for it&#8217;s expected to discover thousands of new <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/exoplanets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a> and shed light on mysterious <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/dark-energy-what-is-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dark energy<\/a> and dark matter, among other accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>Such science work is a few months off, however. The 42-foot-long (12.7 meters) scope isn&#8217;t staying in Earth orbit; it&#8217;s headed to the sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2 (L2), which lies about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from our planet in the Marsward direction.<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple reasons to target L2, which also hosts NASA&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/21925-james-webb-space-telescope-jwst.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a> (JWST) and Europe&#8217;s Euclid probe.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At this special place in space,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/roman-space-telescope\/roman-observatory\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/roman-space-telescope\/roman-observatory\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Roman explainer<\/a>, &#8220;gravitational forces balance to keep objects in steady orbits with very little assistance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Roman&#8217;s barrel-like shape will help block out unwanted light from the sun, Earth and moon, and the spacecraft\u2019s distant location will help keep the instruments cool,&#8221; they added. &#8220;The thermal stability of an observatory at L2 will provide a ten-fold improvement beyond <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble<\/a> in much of the data Roman will gather.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>And don&#8217;t worry about Roman and JWST bumping heads; though their cosmic addresses will be the same, they won&#8217;t actually share space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like Webb, Roman will trace out a large orbit around the actual L2 point \u2014 much larger than the moon&#8217;s orbit around Earth \u2014 and the two will easily be kept far apart,&#8221; NASA wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/roman-space-telescope\/9-things-to-know-about-nasas-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/roman-space-telescope\/9-things-to-know-about-nasas-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">different Roman piece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;ll take Roman about 30 days to fly out to L2 and settle into its looping orbit there. A new round of work will then begin for the Roman team.<\/p>\n<p>            What to read next<\/p>\n<p>    <a id=\"elk-ad469200-9fe6-11f1-bf9d-a3dc264d5adf\"\/>Checking Roman out<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ad469278-9fe6-11f1-aa91-5b32172e39ea\">That work is &#8220;commissioning&#8221; \u2014 making sure that all of Roman&#8217;s systems and subsystems are working properly, as is its science gear, which consists of the Wide Field Instrument (WFI) and the Coronagraph Instrument (CGI).<\/p>\n<p>WFI &#8220;is a 300-megapixel infrared camera that will allow scientists to look very far back in time,&#8221; NASA officials wrote in the explainer. &#8220;Seeing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/52-the-expanding-universe-from-the-big-bang-to-today.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the universe<\/a> in its early stages will help unravel how it has expanded throughout its history, which will hint at how it may continue to evolve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CGI is a technology demonstration that will block the light of distant stars, allowing Roman to spot a wealth of previously unknown alien worlds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will be far more powerful than any other <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-a-coronagraph.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronagraph<\/a> ever flown, seeing planets that are almost a billion times fainter than their host star,&#8221; NASA officials wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Roman should be ready to begin its science work in early 2027, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/articles\/the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-launch-what-to-expect\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.planetary.org\/articles\/the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope-launch-what-to-expect\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to<\/a> the nonprofit Planetary Society. Its science life is slated to last five years, but astronomers are doubtless hoping for more. And there&#8217;s precedent for such optimism; after all, NASA&#8217;s Hubble Space Telescope is still going strong today, more than 36 years after its launch.<\/p>\n<p>Hubble is a special case, given that astronauts repaired and upgraded it over the course of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/hubble-space-telescope\/fixing-the-hubble-space-telescope-a-timeline-of-nasas-shuttle-servicing-missions\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/hubble-space-telescope\/fixing-the-hubble-space-telescope-a-timeline-of-nasas-shuttle-servicing-missions\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/hubble-space-telescope\/fixing-the-hubble-space-telescope-a-timeline-of-nasas-shuttle-servicing-missions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five servicing missions<\/a> between 1993 and 2009. But other NASA space telescopes have far outlasted their warranties without such help.
