Having a confirmed flight, packed luggage, and documentation apparently in order does not guarantee that you will be able to board the plane. Thousands of travelers departing from international airports in the United States could see their plans thwarted for a reason as simple as the expiration date of their passport.

At terminals with high passenger volumes such as Miami, New York, Orlando, or Chicago, airlines check this requirement before allowing boarding. If the document does not meet the conditions required by the immigration authorities, the passenger may be left behind even if they have already paid for their ticket.

Airlines’ checks before boarding

One of the aspects that causes the most problems is the so-called “six-month rule”. This regulation establishes that, for certain international trips, the passport must remain valid for at least six months after the planned departure date from the destination country.

For that reason, airlines carry out a document check before boarding passengers. If they detect that the passport does not meet the validity requirement, they may deny access to the flight.

Not all travelers are equally affected

The six-month requirement does not apply in the same way to all countries. The United States maintains agreements with certain nations whose citizens are exempt from this requirement.

In these cases, the passport only needs to remain valid for the duration of the planned stay, without the need for those additional six months.

The key advice before booking or traveling

Before heading to the airport, it is advisable to check the passport’s expiration date and verify whether the destination country is among the exceptions to this regulation.

Additionally, those who have a valid visa in an already expired passport do not need to apply for a new one. In most cases, they can travel carrying both the expired passport that contains the visa and a valid passport.

A simple check of the expiration date can prevent last-minute cancellations, unexpected expenses, and the unpleasant surprise of not being able to board on the day of travel.

Having a confirmed flight, packed luggage, and documentation apparently in order does not guarantee that you will be…

[18
23,3,21,19,22,20,25,24
post-833035","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-united-states","tag-america","tag-news","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
