Ever since Taken<\/a> was released back in 2008, it has a major influence on the action thriller scene<\/a>, leading to no-nonsense tales of highly skilled parents rescuing their kids, as well as launching the era of the \u201caged action hero.\u201d While the latest hero of this ilk doesn\u2019t quite fall into the latter category (they\u2019re more a \u201cmiddle-aged action hero\u201d), they are fighting hard for the title of best action<\/a> hero parent. In fact, they\u2019re fighting so hard that their particular mission is currently one of the biggest streaming hits in the world. <\/p>\n

Mother. Savior. Killer.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich<\/a> has cemented herself as an action icon over the years thanks to her leading role in the video game adaptation franchise, B-movie efforts like Ultraviolet and In the Lost Lands, and, of course, the sci-fi action cult classic The Fifth Element. Now, Jovovich gets to lead her own take on Taken, adding a healthy dose of Rambo<\/a> to the mix for good measure, as she stars as a former soldier and war hero who must use her particular set of skills when her daughter is kidnapped by sex traffickers. <\/p>\n

Unleashed like never before (even when fighting the undead with superpowers), Jovovich locks and loads as she takes out copious amounts of anonymous villains. Thrust into a criminal underworld while also being hunted by police and the military, she’s forced to fight and survive by any means possible to rescue her child<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Directed by Rambo: Last Blood\u2019s Adrian Gr\u00fcnberg, and starring Jovovich alongside Matthew Modine (Stranger Things), D. B. Sweeney (The Terminal List: Dark Wolf), Don Harvey (We Own This City), and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield), Protector<\/a> flew under the radar upon release in 2025, but since landing on Prime Video<\/a> in 2026, the action thriller has now climbed the ranks to become one of the biggest global hits on the streamer alongside Bob Odenkirk\u2019s latest action outing, Normal, the shark thriller The Devil’s Mouth, Henry Cavill and Guy Ritchie\u2019s <\/a>In the Grey<\/a>, Jason Statham\u2019s Shelter, and the romance outing The Last Sunrise, which is currently holding back all these action icons to take the #1 spot. <\/p>\n

‘Protector’ Caused a Major Divide Between Critics & Audiences<\/p>\n

While Milla Jovovich herself was met with high praise for once again demonstrating her affinity for action<\/a>, Protector was savaged by critics upon release. Fairing worse than Taken 2, and only slightly better than Taken 3, Protector now holds a \u201crotten\u201d score of just 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, who, while admitting it is \u201cintermittently redeemed by Milla Jovovich’s ferocious performance,\u201d concluded that the action thriller is \u201cotherwise ridiculous\u201d and \u201ctrope-leaden.\u201d <\/p>\n

Evidently, this hasn\u2019t stopped Protector from finding global streaming success.
