The footage is convincing. Shot as though from the open door of a military helicopter, it shows oil storage tanks and refinery infrastructure erupting in sequence, smoke stacking into a night sky \u2014 the camera juddering the way real gun-camera video shakes. <\/p>\n

The caption read “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens.” It was signed, as the president signs his official posts, “President DJT.”<\/p>\n

There was just one problem \u2014 it was completely fake, an AI-generated fantasy<\/a> put forward as part of the running show of slop that characterizes President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s output on the social media site he owns.<\/p>\n

Yet the fact remained that Trump had posted the image at a time when the U.S. was conducting airstrikes<\/a> in Iran<\/a>, the first in weeks. He has teased strikes on that Iranian petroleum export facility on multiple times despite warnings that it could touch off a spiraling escalation that would cripple global oil markets and the world economy. <\/p>\n

The imagery was so realistic \u2014 if not a bit too clean-looking \u2014\u00a0the Pentagon was forced to almost immediately explain that the president\u2019s post was not a depiction of reality, as other images posted by Trump and his cabinet secretaries of actual air strikes have been. <\/p>\n

\"TrumpTrump on Monday posted an apparently AI-created video showing an attack on an Iranian island known for oil refining \u2014 one that never happened (@RealDonaldTrump, Truth Social)<\/p>\n

A Defense Department official said Kharg Island \u2014 which handles the overwhelming majority of the country’s crude exports <\/a>\u2014 was not among the targets struck overnight. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the head of the National Iranian Oil Company called the post “laughable” and said conditions on the island were “calm and appropriate.”<\/p>\n

In short, the Pentagon<\/a> was forced to spend part of Monday in the position of formally denying that American forces had bombed something the American commander in chief had just said they bombed.<\/p>\n

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on whether the president had intended the video as a threat or as a misdirection of some sort. <\/p>\n

But conflicts between the president and the government he leads when it comes to clearly verifiable facts is nothing new. Trump has done this before with far lower stakes.<\/p>\n

In September 2019, Trump told the public that Alabama was likely to be hit “much harder than anticipated” by Hurricane Dorian. <\/p>\n

The National Weather Service office in Birmingham corrected him within about 20 minutes, telling Alabamians they would see no impacts from the storm. Three days later the president displayed a NOAA forecast map in the Oval Office on which the projected cone had been extended, in black Sharpie marker, to cover Alabama. <\/p>\n

And two days after that, NOAA’s headquarters issued an unsigned statement siding with the president and rebuking its own Birmingham forecasters. Subsequent reviews found that statement had been produced under political pressure and violated the agency’s scientific-integrity rules.<\/p>\n

The whole episode, dubbed \u201cSharpiegate,\u201d was mocked as farce at the time. <\/p>\n

But the comical aspects of it aside, the entire situation appears in hindsight to have been a rehearsal for how to beat the government into submission when it comes to the truth.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n

First, the president says a false thing.<\/p>\n

Then his government’s own experts contradict him with actual facts and data.<\/p>\n

Finally, the government is made to conform to the president\u2019s reality rather than the facts and data.<\/p>\n

\"TrumpTrump famously doctored a NOAA map to show a hurricane threatening Alabama when no such threat had ever existed<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a pattern that has played out before across both of Trump\u2019s two terms, and in his second term he has tried to avoid such uncomfortable situations by firing the experts who might contradict him. <\/p>\n

But some things, like wars and those who fight them, have to remain as reality-based as possible. That\u2019s why the Pentagon contradicted the president, promptly and on the record. <\/p>\n

\u2018Breaking our shared reality\u2019<\/p>\n

In institutional terms that is a better outcome than 2019. In practical terms it is worse, because the public was handed a dispute between the President of the United States and the Department of Defense over whether an act of war had occurred, and told to sort it out.<\/p>\n

What makes it even worse is the way the White House has closed off the escape hatch that a previous administration might have reached for after such a colossal screw-up in presidential rhetoric by insisting \u2014 repeatedly \u2014 that Trump’s Truth Social posts constitute official statements from the commander in chief. <\/p>\n

That makes Monday’s AI-slop video not just an instance of a president sharing a meme but an official communication of the United States government, in wartime, that was fabricated.<\/p>\n

Quinten Langley, a crisis communications expert who serves as an educator-at-large at Yeshiva University and other New York-area institutions, toldThe Independent that the entire affair is an indicator of how the president is \u201cbreaking our shared reality\u201d on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an increasing disconnect between Trump and reality. He has already \u2018won\u2019 the war with Iran more than a dozen times. He \u2018wins\u2019 elections he lost. It\u2019s not a matter of breaking trust in government. It breaks trust in society as some people swallow his claims and others don\u2019t,\u201d Langley said. <\/p>\n

And Christopher Lee, a political consultant with Foresight Strategies, said the president\u2019s tendency to push back against objective reality leaves him with \u201cthe same kind of credibility as a statement from North Korean state media.\u201d <\/p>\n

Further, said Lee, Trump\u2019s posting \u201chas nothing to do with protecting American interests or our people. It\u2019s all about Trump not wanting to be seen as wrong or having made a mistake. After all, that\u2019s been the Trump M.O. for most of his life.\u201d <\/p>\n

But Shirvin Zeinalzadeh, an instructor at the School of Politics and Global Studies at Arizona State University, suggests that there\u2019s more going on than Trump simply feeding his ego with these outrageous posts.<\/p>\n

Zeinalzadeh said Trump\u2019s fake Kharg Island attack video should be seen in the broader context of a meme war that has seen Iran make successful use of AI-generated content to mock and demean the president, even if a personal response in kind from a head of state is unusual.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a messaging signal,\u201d said Zeinalzadeh. \u201cIn statecraft and political and kinetic warfare, signaling and propaganda have always been a traditional form of communication. Now, with the fact that we’ve moved it onto social media, this reaches a wider audience much quicker and sparks debate, which is exactly what he wants.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s an online kind of war of technology and AI taking place alongside the kind of traditional kinetic warfare that’s taking place, alongside the economic warfare, we’re fighting a kind of a battle on several fronts here, and AI is just one of them. So it sends a signal to Iran that this is the kind of thing going through the president’s mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the fact remains that Trump\u2019s post might have made things worse had the Pentagon not been willing to intervene with a denial so quickly.<\/p>\n

The United States is six months into a war with Iran with no exit. Real strikes did occur overnight \u2014 on Larak Island, where an American official said Iranian forces were preparing mine-laying rockets to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil passed before the conflict. Iran fired missiles at Jordan in response.<\/p>\n

And Kharg Island is not a symbolic target. Striking it would be a decision to attack Iran’s economic lifeline, with consequences for oil markets, for shipping, and for whatever remains of the negotiations.<\/p>\n

Every party that has to make decisions in that environment \u2014 Tehran’s military planners, Gulf governments, allied intelligence services, commodity traders, and American voters trying to understand a war being waged in their name \u2014 now has to run every future statement from this president through a filter that did not previously exist. Not “is he exaggerating?” but “did this occur at all?”<\/p>\n

Lee, who has worked with Democratic candidates and labor unions for a quarter-century, told The Independent that Trump\u2019s Kharg Island fantasy video \u201ccreates so many more problems than just a stupid social media post.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department of Defense, already saddled with a less than competent Secretary of Defense, loses face in having to walk back another Trump flight of madness, tell Allies it was just another \u2018Trump being Trump\u2019 moment and take it on the chin as Iran makes a joke out of our defense capabilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ultimate cost is the essential credibility of the United States on the international stage \u2014 an authority and reliability carefully built and nurtured over generations at tremendous cost, through a World War, a Cold War and everything in between. <\/p>\n
