Matthew Mayich\u2019s family has acknowledged the tragic road ahead after the NHL prospect collapsed and was hospitalized<\/a> following an intense outdoor workout that resulted in a heat stroke.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe family really appreciates all the support they\u2019re getting,\u201d the Mayichs\u2019 attorney, Rob Carey, exclusively told Us on Thursday, September 3. \u201cIt matters to them. They\u2019re in a state they never knew about. They\u2019re all huddled around Matthew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carey continued, \u201cEvery day is the same. No good outcome is coming. They really appreciate the prayers and the love and the support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayich, 21, was hospitalized on August 20, after a military-style workout with the Arizona State hockey team, which reportedly lasted for roughly an hour and included sprints, planks, push-ups and bear crawls. The session was led by former Green Beret Tim Ziesel.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tThe events leading to NHL prospect Matthew Mayich\u2019s heat stroke and subsequent hospitalization are now under formal police investigation, according to The Athletic.\u00a0 The police department at Arizona State University \u2014 where Mayich, 21, is a sophomore on the Sun Devils hockey team \u2014 is determining whether any criminal acts occurred when he collapsed during [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n

During the workout, Mayich became dizzy and disoriented before suffering \u201cexertional heat stroke that caused a lack of oxygen to the brain.\u201d Carey has alleged that players were not given standard breaks and only players who led the exercises were given water.<\/p>\n

Carey previously acknowledged that there was \u201czero road to recovery\u201d for Mayich, a sophomore defenseman from Stoney Creek, Ontario, who transferred to Arizona State from Clarkson University during the offseason.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have a 21-year-old step on a field for his first coach-led practice ever \u2014 he\u2019d only been in Arizona for five days \u2014 and he\u2019s incapacitated and never to recover? There\u2019s a mistake. There\u2019s something wrong\u201d Carey said. \u201cSomething happened that shouldn\u2019t have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carey called out Arizona State for their initial response, after athletic director Graham Rossini instituted a review, but stopped short of admitting \u201csomething went wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can\u2019t even admit that there\u2019s a problem, you\u2019re probably not going to be able to fix that problem, right?\u201d Carey argued. \u201cThat\u2019s the problem with their initial review. They wouldn\u2019t even call it an investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThat\u2019s just not appropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Us has reached out to Rossini and Arizona State University for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Athletic reported on Thursday that the incident is now under formal investigation by the police department at Arizona State, which Carey confirmed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad it\u2019s happening,\u201d Carey said. \u201cI hope they follow police protocols relating to tracking down all the evidence, using subpoenas or warrants, if necessary, that they get unfettered access to the university systems for digital information.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

When it comes to potential criminal charges, Carey said \u201cyou have to wait until you get the evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t really opine on who should be charged, if anyone, until you get the facts,\u201d he explained. \u201cYou have to know: Was this approved by the athletics department, or did the coach just kind of decide to go rogue and have a practice outside without telling anybody? What was this charge to the Green Beret? Was he doing what he was told to do? What were the safety precautions? Was there a cold water immersion tub nearby? Any other cooling equipment? Because that is fundamental: the cooling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carey continued, \u201cIf you are at risk for heat stroke, the number one thing that needs to happen right off the bat before transport is cooling \u2026 and I don\u2019t think that happened here.
