{"id":835833,"date":"2026-09-04T05:10:19","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T05:10:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/835833\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T05:10:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T05:10:19","slug":"inside-the-met-galas-options-following-the-galliano-fiasco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/835833\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside the Met Gala&#8217;s options following the Galliano fiasco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Met is going to have a rough time coming up with a Plan B after calling off the <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/08\/31\/style\/john-galliano-themed-met-gala-2027-cancelled-after-backlash\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Galliano exhibit,<\/a> we\u2019re told.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nine months until the famous \u201cfirst Monday in May,\u201d when the Met Gala usually takes place. But that\u2019s an extremely tight timeline.<\/p>\n<p>A source tells us that a significant amount of work had likely already gone into\u00a0\u201cJohn Galliano: Horizons,\u201d\u00a0which was slated to open in May 2027 with the star-studded Met Gala, which is a vital fundraiser for the museum\u2019s Costume Institute.<\/p>\n<p>The cancelation of the planned John Galliano Met Gala and exhibit has caused a crisis.  WireImage<\/p>\n<p>That work would have included everything from coming up with a concept and research to sourcing archival pieces and tracking down important items for the exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>While one source tells us the official Met Gala theme is normally finalized about a year in advance, another source says themes can be plotted years ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The designer stepped aside following backlash from civic leaders, board members, donors and Jewish groups. Dave Benett\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey could move up a future show that has already started to be planned,\u201d says the source.<\/p>\n<p>But even then there\u2019s a catch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would not be on the same scale. There isn\u2019t enough time to put together an exhibit [of a similar size],\u201d the source says.<\/p>\n<p>Another option would be to build a show around the Costume Institute\u2019s permanent collection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[It] has tons of pieces, so they could access what they have and make something thematic,\u201d says the source.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Met\u2019s website, the collection comprises more than\u00a035,000 works representing \u201cfive continents and seven centuries of fashionable dress, regional costumes, and accessories for men, women, and children, from the 15th century to the present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Winour and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton have wanted to do an exhibition on Galliano for years. WWD via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Then there is the most drastic option, canceling the gala, which rakes in millions of dollars for the museum and gets eyeballs on Vogue.<\/p>\n<p>The move is not unprecedented. The gala <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/05\/20\/nyregion\/the-met-cancels-exhibit-on-chanel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">was canceled in 2000<\/a> over internal debates about curatorial control with Karl Lagerfeld for a Chanel theme, and the death of the Costume Institute\u2019s chief curator,\u00a0Richard Martin. (Chanel was later honored twice: In 2005 with \u201cThe House of Chanel\u201d and 2023\u2019s \u201cKarl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.\u201d) It was also canceled during the COVID lockdown and after 9\/11.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis follows Galliano\u2019s announcement Monday that he was pulling out of the exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/31\/us-news\/inside-john-gallianos-decision-to-pull-out-of-met-gala-and-how-it-could-affect-anna-wintours-legacy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">after vocal backlash from<\/a> civic leaders, donors, board members and Jewish groups.<\/p>\n<p>Galliano was convicted in a French court in 2011 following two separate antisemitic and racists outbursts. WireImage<\/p>\n<p>In an Instagram statement, Galliano wrote: \u201cAfter much reflection and discussion with all those involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that it is best for the exhibition not to take place at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cI do not want the debate surrounding me to place the Met in a difficult position or to distract from the remarkable work of the Costume Institute. I also recognise and respect that an exhibition honouring my work would be painful for some.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0gala had been slated for May 3, 2027 \u2014 Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n<p>Galliano, shown here at the Met in 1996, has several pieces in the Costume Institute\u2019s permanent collection. Kevin Mazur\/Getty Images for The Met Museum\/Vogue<\/p>\n<p>Galliano was found guilty of\u00a0public insults for reasons of religion, race or ethnicity \u2014 which included anti-Asian and antisemitic outbursts in which he praised Hitler and told patrons at a restaurant their ancestors would be been \u201cgassed and dead\u201d \u2014 in a French Court in September 2011 for two separate incidents. He was given a suspended fine of 6,000 euros.<\/p>\n<p>He apologized, blamed drugs and alcohol and went to rehab. He also met with religious leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Fashion publicist Lauren London accused <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/31\/us-news\/john-gallianos-harmful-behavior-allegedly-continued-well-past-rehab-after-antisemitic-remarks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galliano of screaming<\/a> \u201cMerry Christmas\u201d at a woman he heard speaking Hebrew in July 2019 at the booze-free Henri Chenot spa in Merano, Italy. A rep for Galliano denied the encounter to the Times.<\/p>\n<p>Galliano apologized for his outburst and went to rehab. He has since been accused of further antisemitism, which he denies.
