The USC Viterbi School of Engineering and the USC School of Advanced Computing<\/a> are proud to announce the launch of a new undergraduate degree program, the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence (BSAI), a comprehensive and forward-looking degree that positions graduates to become leaders in one of the most transformative technologies of our time. This new degree reflects our enduring commitment to preparing students to participate in the AI revolution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Designed collaboratively by three academic departments\u2014the Thomas Lord Department of Computer Science<\/a>, the Ming Hsieh Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering<\/a>, and the Daniel J. Epstein Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering<\/a>\u2014this new degree builds on USC\u2019s long legacy in computing and leadership in AI education.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWhile Artificial Intelligence permeates all our degree programs, we created this new, focused degree to meet the growing organization and industry demands for core AI graduates,\u201d said Gaurav S. Sukhatme, Executive Vice Dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and inaugural Director of the USC School of Advanced Computing.\u00a0<\/p>\n Students in the new BSAI degree will learn about the mathematical and statistical foundations that underpin AI, allowing them to understand and refine the performance of existing and future AI systems. They will also learn how to develop efficient AI algorithms, program new AI systems, and apply AI technology to other domains. They will be dextrous in both AI software and hardware and will have a grounding in evaluating the ethics of AI applications.<\/p>\n Available on the Common Application, the program\u2019s first cohort will begin at USC\u2019s University Park Campus in Fall 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n Enrolled students may choose one of three specialized tracks:<\/p>\n Computing Foundations and Applications: Focused on developing and adapting AI algorithms (with courses centered on natural language processing, robotics, and computer vision) During the course of their time on campus, students will have opportunity to interact with thought leaders and conduct research at the USC Viterbi School of Engineering\u2019s renowned research centers, including the Information Sciences Institute<\/a>, the Institute for Creative Technologies<\/a>, the Center for Generative AI<\/a>, the Center for AI in Society<\/a>, and the Center for Ethics and Trust in Computing<\/a>, along with centers aligned with global industry partners such as Amazon<\/a>, Capital One<\/a>, and Meta<\/a>.<\/p>\n Students will also be able to enrich their education through co-curricular opportunities via participation in student organizations such as the Center for AI in Society\u2019s student group CAIS++<\/a>.<\/p>\n A Legacy of Leadership and a Launchpad for the Future<\/p>\n USC has long been at the forefront of computing and AI, playing a key role in the birth of the internet, contributing to the foundational research for the development of the JPEG and MPEG standards, along with creating AI tools that impact healthcare innovation, finance, security, entertainment, mobility, energy, and more. In 2017, USC Viterbi alumni were co-authors on the seminal paper, \u201cAttention is All You Need<\/a>,\u201d which laid the foundation for ChatGPT. In 2023, the university announced its\u00a0 \u201cFrontiers of Computing<\/a>\u201d initiative, a renewed commitment to advancing knowledge in computing and related disciplines that created USC\u2019s new School of Advanced Computing and, in 2024, opened a new state-of-the-art computer science building, the Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Human-Centered Computation Hall,<\/a> which serves as the university\u2019s hub for cutting-edge research and a place for students \u2014 including the BSAI students \u2014 to gather and study.\u00a0<\/p>\n More information is available at:\u00a0<\/p>\n
