AUGUSTA, Maine (WGME) — A nonprofit is calling Gov. Janet Mills a “healthcare hero.”<\/p>\n
Consumers for Affordable Health Care, an Augusta-based nonprofit, hosted its Health Care for Maine Conference Thursday at the Augusta Civic Center.<\/p>\n
Organizers say the event highlights past successes that have improved access to health care and insurance coverage in Maine.<\/p>\n
Mills used the event to call on federal leaders to take more action on health care.<\/p>\n
“What health care really needs in this country right now is not a series of Band-Aids. It needs major surgery. It’s time for the federal government to take its head out of the sand and address the crisis of health care head-on,” Mills said.<\/p>\n
The governor’s office says that on her first day in office, Mills expanded health coverage to more than 100,000 people by implementing the Medicaid expansion approved by Maine voters but blocked by former Gov.
