{"id":837337,"date":"2026-09-05T12:38:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-05T12:38:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/837337\/"},"modified":"2026-09-05T12:38:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T12:38:09","slug":"trump-threatens-to-halt-trade-following-news-that-us-trade-deficit-grew-in-july","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/837337\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump Threatens to Halt Trade Following News That US Trade Deficit Grew in July"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmerica\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/trade-deficit\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trade-deficit\" data-tag=\"trade-deficit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trade deficit<\/a> with the rest of the world grew in July to the highest level seen in more than a year, prompting an outraged response from the Commander in Chief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis announced Thursday that the goods and services deficit increased by $17.4 billion month over month, from $71.2 billion in June to $88.6 billion in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe nation\u2019s exports totaled around $310.7 billion\u2014$6.6 billion less than the flow of goods to other countries seen in June, as the U.S. sold less crude oil and gold to trading partners. Meanwhile, July imports amounted to $399.3 billion, a $10.8 billion increase from the month prior, driven chiefly by technology like semiconductors and computer parts, likely to service growth in the artificial intelligence sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe government\u2019s data showed that the goods deficit in particular increased by $17.6 billion to $119.6 billion, while the services surplus ticked up from $0.2 billion to $31.0 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tRegardless of the rising export deficit, White House senior deputy press secretary Kush Desai painted the news as \u201cmore evidence that President <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/trump\/\" id=\"auto-tag_trump\" data-tag=\"trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a>\u2019s trade agenda is working.\u201d The year-to-date figures show the goods and services deficit fell by $188.4 billion (29.6 percent) from the same period in 2025. Exports grew by 12 percent\u2014a total of $237.2 billion\u2014while imports increased by 1.9 percent, or $48.8 billion, during that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cCapital goods imports, the machinery and equipment we need to reindustrialize, were the highest share of goods imports on record,\u201d Desai wrote in a post on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHowever, the persistent and sizable trade deficits with countries like China, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, the European Union and Mexico remain despite <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/sustainability\/american-apparel-industry-groups-aafa-ilo-rubio-1239197616\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s aggressive tariff regime and his argument that duties would act as an antidote to global imbalances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe deficit with Canada did decrease, however, to $3.2 billion, in the face of a tit-for-tat trade war that has been raging for the past month. <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/trade\/canada-tariffs-ustr-carney-yale-budget-lab-prices-trade-1239165714\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian tariffs on U.S. imports will take effect on Tuesday<\/a>, which will no doubt constrain the flow of American-made products to the north, so that win may be short-lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThere\u2019s little historical evidence that the administration\u2019s trade platform has materially decreased the deficit or that the year-and-a-half-old strategy will yield such results moving forward. The July 2026 deficit is bigger than the average monthly deficit seen in 2024, before <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/trade\/us-canada-trade-deal-tariffs-trump-carney-greer-ustr-section-338-1239144006\/\" id=\"related_article_link_trump\" data-tag=\"trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump<\/a> was elected, and it is the largest seen since \u201cLiberation Day\u201d in April 2025, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/tariffs\/\" id=\"auto-tag_tariffs\" data-tag=\"tariffs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a> first took effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTrump, for his part, appeared sour over the numbers.
