Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said he is delighted with the additions to his squad despite being outspent by Premier League rivals in the transfer window and short on depth in some areas.<\/p>\n

United put their efforts into rebuilding Carrick\u2019s midfield<\/a>, with Casemiro\u2019s exit and a serious injury to Manuel Ugarte offset by the acquisitions of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba<\/a> for a combined 155 million pounds ($210m).<\/p>\n

The Red Devils\u2019 fiercest rivals spent almost that budget on a single player as Manchester City broke the British transfer record for Enzo Fernandez<\/a>, while Liverpool splashed up to 123 million pounds ($166m) on French winger Bradley Barcola<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite returning to the Champions League for the first time in three seasons, Carrick hinted at having to work within financial restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went into the window wanting to come out stronger from the group that we had last season. We\u2019ve definitely added to that,\u201d Carrick told a pre-match media conference ahead of Sunday\u2019s trip to Everton.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we\u2019ve done a lot of good work in that respect and the situation is what it is in terms of finances and what we can work with and what we\u2019re trying to get the most of.<\/p>\n

\u201cCertainly, the players that we\u2019ve brought into the group I\u2019m absolutely delighted with and I think we\u2019ve done some really good business there.\u201d<\/p>\n

What areas of doubt remain for Manchester United?<\/p>\n

United look particularly short in defence with the injury-prone Luke Shaw their only senior option at left-back.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat squad ever is the perfect squad? You\u2019ve always got to find ways of adapting,\u201d Carrick added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re building and trying to push to go through a period where we\u2019re trying to get to the top \u2013 that\u2019s the ultimate goal \u2013 you\u2019ve got to make steps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joshua Zirkzee was among those expected to leave Old Trafford to boost the funds available to Carrick.<\/p>\n

Despite interest from Fiorentina and Juventus and a deadline-day approach from Everton, the Netherlands international remains at United, despite limited game time over the past two seasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to play more than he has done and that\u2019s the good competition and healthy competition for places,\u201d said Carrick.<\/p>\n

\u201cJosh can do some really, really top things. I\u2019ve seen it myself, and I know he can do that and looking forward to him doing that a little bit more often for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everton boss David Moyes conceded \u200che is left with a small squad after a disappointing transfer window in \u2060which key players departed \u2060and a deadline day medical fell through as they tried to sign American striker Folarin Balogun.<\/p>\n

Moyes expressed frustration at his club\u2019s close-season business<\/a>, \u2060revealing they did not want to lose Senegal forward Iliman Ndiaye but were powerless when bigger teams like Manchester City look to sign their players.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisappointed we didn\u2019t do more business \u2060and disappointed things didn\u2019t go our way in the end. Sometimes in football you have to live with disappointment and we will move on,\u201d Moyes told reporters on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what I needed and I know what it\u2019s like to build a squad for the Premier League, I know \u200cthe numbers you need. I\u2019ve been around long enough to know that, but some things went against us and some things could have gone better.<\/p>\n

\u201cUltimately, we didn\u2019t want to lose a lot of the players, but for different reasons that had to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

AS Monaco chief executive Thiago Scuro said Everton raised concerns over Balogun\u2019s medical late on deadline day and that the US international pulled out because he was uncomfortable with the doubts \u2060raised by the Merseyside club over his health.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t anybody\u2019s fault. \u2060It happens in football a lot,\u201d Moyes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe player had a problem in his medical and that was simply it. There\u2019s no other story behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everton face fans backlash over transfer window business<\/p>\n

Everton\u2019s Fans\u2019 Forum also criticised the club\u2019s planning and recruitment after the transfer \u2060window closed, saying supporters deserved answers after another window marked by late activity and a failed pursuit of key targets.<\/p>\n

With a thin \u2060squad, Moyes said Everton\u2019s academy players would have to step \u2060up but was unsure if they could fill the gaps.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they ready to make the step up? I\u2019m not sure about that. We will see how that goes, some of them might be pushed in,\u201d Moyes said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re all \u200cgoing to have to be able to muck in as we\u2019ve got a real small squad now,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives opportunities to some people who have not had them and sometimes \u200cin \u200cfootball you need to be given that chance so that you can show what you can do. Let\u2019s see if some of them can do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
