{"id":838383,"date":"2026-09-06T11:32:18","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T11:32:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/838383\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T11:32:18","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T11:32:18","slug":"nasa-expands-deep-space-network-with-giant-new-dish-in-california-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/838383\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA expands Deep Space Network with giant new dish in California desert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-39c40094-a836-11f1-b82b-2f40d2103577\">NASA&#8217;s long-distance spacecraft-calling network just got a boost.<\/p>\n<p>The Deep Space Network (DSN), best known for communicating with distant spacecraft such as Voyager 1, Voyager 2 and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18377-new-horizons.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18377-new-horizons.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18377-new-horizons.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Horizons<\/a>, added a 114-foot (34-meter) radio-frequency antenna in California, boosting capacity on the increasingly crowded network.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-39c40094-a836-11f1-b82b-2f40d2103577-2\">More than 40 spacecraft exploring the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solar system<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-space-definition-explanation\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-space-definition-explanation\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/interstellar-space-definition-explanation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interstellar space<\/a> use DSN, which has struggled to keep pace with growing demand. Communications with the uncrewed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-1-going-back-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 1<\/a> mission in 2022 and the crewed <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-2-humans-moon-orbit\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 2<\/a> mission in 2026 <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2026\/06\/after-nearly-breaking-nasas-deep-space-network-worked-well-on-artemis-ii\/\" data-url=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2026\/06\/after-nearly-breaking-nasas-deep-space-network-worked-well-on-artemis-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">took priority<\/a> as they traveled around <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>, substantially reducing the network&#8217;s capacity to support other missions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8c50cf0e-a836-11f1-9529-03439378a760\">At least as early as 2021, managers were warning that despite ongoing efforts to add new antennas to DSN, the agency cannot reach all deep-space missions at once.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to add capacity and more antennas, but we can&#8217;t keep up with the demand that&#8217;s currently out there, so missions should expect to be getting less availability,&#8221; Brad Arnold, DSN manager at NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), said during a presentation attended <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/increasing-demands-putting-pressure-on-deep-space-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/increasing-demands-putting-pressure-on-deep-space-network\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">by Space News<\/a>. Arnold also warned that the Artemis moon program would be &#8220;the gorilla in the room,&#8221; because the astronauts by default have to be prioritized over robotic spacecraft: &#8220;That ultimately will affect our ability to service the rest of the missions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because the DSN is designed to serve both human and robotic deep-space spacecraft. (Image credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-09482a02-a837-11f1-8aa9-c3d77709f5ff\">The DSN helped relay communications from Apollo 11&#8217;s historic moonwalk by NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong&#8217;s on July 20, 1969, and has since supported countless milestones. This includes images from Mars rovers starting in the 1990s and data showing that both <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17688-voyager-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Voyager 1<\/a> and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/voyager-2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Voyager 2<\/a> crossed into interstellar space in the 2010s.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vanilla.futurecdn.net\/space\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>These days, Artemis isn&#8217;t the only extra demand on DSN; other space agencies also use the network for their own spacecraft, to a much greater degree than 50 years ago as space exploration has matured. NASA is also planning a permanent Moon Base near the lunar south pole as soon as the 2030s, although the agency does <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/moonbase-systems\/#communications\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/moonbase-systems\/#communications\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">promise<\/a> the base will, in its third phase, include &#8220;a coordinated lunar network supporting communications across Moon Base assets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The DSN operates three complexes \u2014 at Goldstone in California, near Madrid in Spain and Canberra in Australia \u2014 each of which includes a large 230-ft (70m) antenna alongside several smaller dishes. The new antenna is about half that size and is co-located at Goldstone. It came online on Aug. 3, tracking NASA&#8217;s Chandra X-ray Observatory.<\/p>\n<p>DSS-23 is the fifth of six new 34-meter antennas planned under the DSN&#8217;s Aperture Enhancement Project, which began in 2009. The project is expected to be completed when the sixth antenna, DSS-33, comes online at the Canberra complex in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion has also <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/oig.nasa.gov\/news\/revitalizing-the-deep-space-network-to-support-nasas-growing-space-exploration-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/oig.nasa.gov\/news\/revitalizing-the-deep-space-network-to-support-nasas-growing-space-exploration-program\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"astronomy\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">taken longer and cost more than originally planned<\/a>. A 2015 NASA Office of Inspector General report estimated the project at $362.4 million, but by the start of fiscal year 2023, expected costs had risen by 68% to $706 million and the project was nearly five years behind schedule.
