{"id":838453,"date":"2026-09-06T13:08:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T13:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/838453\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T13:08:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T13:08:09","slug":"dlnr-legacy-land-conservation-program-opens-land-acquisition-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/838453\/","title":{"rendered":"DLNR Legacy Land Conservation Program opens land acquisition grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) &#8211; The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is inviting applications for land acquisition grants for fiscal year 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">An expected $5.3 million in grant funds will be available through the Legacy Land Conservation Program (LLCP) in an effort to preserve land with environmental, cultural or historic value. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The grants also go toward protecting park and trail systems that provide access to such land. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cLegacy Land makes a difference by saving \u02bb\u0101ina from degradation, destruction and land use conversion,\u201d said LLCP Program Specialist David Penn. \u201cIt requires that a land owner manage property to protect Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s precious and irreplaceable resources for the benefit of present and future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The program offers two competitive grants: land acquisition and land management (only for land previously funded by the program). <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Both require reviews and recommendations from the Legacy Land Conservation Commission, legislative consultation, and final approvals from the Board of Land and Natural Resources and Gov. Green.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Under Hawaii state law, the LLCP funds land acquisitions that protect the following nine key resource values: <\/p>\n<p>Watershed protectionCoastal areas, beaches and ocean accessHabitat protectionCultural and historical sitesRecreational and public hunting areasParks Natural areasAgricultural productionOpen spaces and scenic resources<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Successful grant applications must explain the site\u2019s preservation value and future management plans.<\/p>\n<p>More about the LLCP<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Since 2005, the LLCP has managed contributions of more than 73 million dollars from the State Land Conservation Fund for 55 properties and more than 31,000 acres statewide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">LLCP recently acquired 940 acres under community-stewardship, stretching from windward O\u02bbahu valley lands to the Ko\u02bbolau mountain ridges (K\u0101ne\u02bbohe Pali to Lo\u02bbi). <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Additionally, at \u02bbAnaeho\u02bbomalu Kapalaoa, lineal descendants (N\u0101 \u02bb\u014ciwi O Pu\u02bbuanahulu) reclaimed resource-rich lands to preserve and practice traditional cultural beliefs and values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">For more information on the application process, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/dlnr.hawaii.gov\/ecosystems\/llcp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dlnr.hawaii.gov\/ecosystems\/llcp\/\">program website<\/a> or contact the program office at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/09\/06\/dlnr-legacy-land-conservation-program-opens-land-acquisition-grants\/mailto:legacyland@hawaii.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.hawaiinewsnow.com\/2026\/09\/06\/dlnr-legacy-land-conservation-program-opens-land-acquisition-grants\/mailto:legacyland@hawaii.gov\">legacyland@hawaii.gov<\/a> or 808-586-0921.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Hawaii News Now.
