The Miami-Dade County Sheriff blasted a proposal that would temporarily transform Miami into a real-life version of Grand Theft Auto 6\u2019s<\/a> Vice City.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, a self-described \u201ctough-on-crime\u201d Republican, slammed Miami-Dade\u2019s Democratic Mayor Daniella Levine Cava for a potential marketing tie-in with the game\u2019s creator, Rockstar Games.<\/p>\n

The upcoming and highly anticipated video game<\/a> takes place in a fictional southern Florida city, with players taking part in murders and other depravity.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrand Theft Auto is a video game franchise built around criminal activity \u2014 we need to seriously consider the message we send when our own government promotes a fictional identity<\/a> centered around many of those same crimes,\u201d the sheriff said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIts fictional world includes murder, robbery, drug trafficking, carjacking, violence against law enforcement, and other conduct that the men and women of the Miami-Dade Sheriff\u2019s Office work every single day to prevent,\u201d Cordero-Stutz added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As part of the plan, dubbed GTA VI \u00d7 MDC, Miami \u2014 described as \u201cthe real-world inspiration for Vice City\u201d \u2014 would be transformed using \u201capproved GTA VI characters or visual references,\u201d if approved, according to public records<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Miami\u2019s Sheriff has slammed Mayor Daniella Levine Cava for a proposed marketing collaboration pitched by the municipality in June to Rockstar Games that would turn Miami into the fictional Vice City. Rockstar Games<\/p>\n

Some of the ideas pitched by the city to the gaming developer include renaming Miami International Airport to Vice City International and the Port of Miami to Port Gellhorn \u2014 which serve as the locations\u2019 in-game counterparts<\/a> \u2014 and installing Vice City-labeled sewer and stormwater manholes.<\/p>\n

The city even went as far as proposing a Vice City Motor Fest event, which would \u201ccombine classic cars, customized vehicles, lowriders, motorcycles, tropical graphics, and local entertainment within a controlled, family-appropriate setting,\u201d according to the pitch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Police Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez, a Republican weighing a 2028 challenge to Levine Cava for her seat as mayor, also weighed in and attacked his political foe over the proposal, saying that he \u201ccannot believe\u201d the city is \u201ceven considering temporarily rebranding important county assets.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe should be promoting the Miami-Dade we have worked so hard to build, not a fictional version of our community defined by crime and violence,\u201d Bermudez said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The marketing plan hasn\u2019t been approved, according to the mayor\u2019s office.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing has been formally agreed to or approved, and any idea would have to go through the appropriate review and approval process,\u201d Carlos Suarez, a spokesperson for the mayor, told PCGamer.<\/p>\n

But discussions were still ongoing.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven Miami-Dade\u2019s clear influence on the game, we think there could be a unique opportunity to generate revenue for the County while showcasing Miami-Dade to a massive audience,\u201d Suarez added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
