Just under half (41 percent) is classified as being in extreme drought, while 21.3 percent is in severe drought. According to Wright, \u201cthe recent spike is the most dramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"14\" articletitle=\"NASA Map Shows Impact of Water Crisis on Tens of Thousands of Americans\">A new analysis report prepared for Newsweek by geoscientist Elena Maksimovich, CTO and head of climate data at Everloop, a sustainability and climate-risk consultancy, found that the summer of 2026 in Puerto Rico was exceptionally dry, though not unprecedented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"15\" articletitle=\"NASA Map Shows Impact of Water Crisis on Tens of Thousands of Americans\">According to the report, the June-July-August period of 2026 was the second driest summer season in Puerto Rico since 1950, based on data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). It added that exposure to major droughts and wildfires is also increasing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"27\" articletitle=\"NASA Map Shows Impact of Water Crisis on Tens of Thousands of Americans\">The primary two hidden climate risks are storms and heatwaves, while drought, wildfire, and landslide risk are also present, as of September 4, based on available historical observations for Puerto Rico, Maksimovich noted in her report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph-module-scss-module__0ovlkG__blockParagraph\" blockindex=\"28\" articletitle=\"NASA Map Shows Impact of Water Crisis on Tens of Thousands of Americans\">The report said: \u201cInland and coastal flood risk are not zero and should not be underestimated and neglected.
