TOKYO – Japan’s economy expanded an annualized real 1.4 percent in the April-June quarter, revised up from a 1.1 percent increase in the preliminary estimate, on a narrower decline in business investment, government data showed Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Real gross domestic product, adjusted for inflation, grew 0.4 percent from the previous quarter, compared with a preliminary reading of a 0.3 percent increase, the Cabinet Office said.<\/p>\n
GDP is the total value of goods and services produced in a country.<\/p>\n
In the latest GDP data, capital spending fell 0.9 percent in the three months through June, revised up from a 1.2 percent decrease, while public investment was downgraded to a 0.5 percent drop from a 0.1 percent decline.<\/p>\n
Private consumption, which accounts for more than half of GDP, edged up 0.01 percent, revised up from a 0.02 percent drop in a preliminary reading, a Cabinet Office official said.<\/p>\n
Exports rose 0.4 percent from the previous quarter, revised down from a 0.5 percent increase, while imports were downgraded to a 1.7 percent decrease from a 1.5 percent decline.<\/p>\n
