{"id":840733,"date":"2026-09-08T15:56:13","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T15:56:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/840733\/"},"modified":"2026-09-08T15:56:13","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T15:56:13","slug":"over-40-of-earth-could-become-drylands-by-2100-scientists-warn-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/840733\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 40% of Earth Could Become &#8216;Drylands&#8217; by 2100, Scientists Warn : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the world gets hotter, many of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/when-rainfall-kissed-the-driest-desert-on-earth-it-was-literally-the-kiss-of-death\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">driest regions<\/a> are expected to get even drier.<\/p>\n<p>When this happens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/arid-deserts-are-devouring-earths-rangelands-threatening-billions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the boundaries of arid regions are expected to creep forward<\/a>, transforming landscapes and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/plants-are-vanishing-from-california-s-deserts-and-nothing-s-replacing-them\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killing off plant life<\/a> no longer able to cope.<\/p>\n<p>Amidst the changes, projections suggest Earth&#8217;s drylands could grow to cover over 40 percent of the planet&#8217;s land area by the end of the 21st century, according to a new study in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae9b29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Research Letters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But in a surprise twist, the most prominent contributor to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/climate-change\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73046\" data-postid=\"218181\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">climate change<\/a> \u2013 rising carbon dioxide (CO2) levels \u2013 may actually be slowing the expansion of Earth&#8217;s drylands, researchers say.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drylands\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Drylands<\/a> are regions that face great water scarcity, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-mapped-the-invisible-rivers-flowing-through-the-sky-above-south-america\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">precipitation<\/a> is low relative to the potential loss of water through evaporation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-desert-plant-in-death-valley-can-air-condition-its-own-leaves\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plant transpiration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the concept is well established, and scientists broadly agree on where the world&#8217;s major drylands lie, differences in measurement techniques and climate data mean global estimates of Earth&#8217;s dryland coverage <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/gcb.70102\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">can vary substantially<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As the new paper urges, there are good reasons to find common ground.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/dryland-projections.jpg\" alt=\"Over 40% of Earth Could Be Drylands by Century's End, Projections Show\" class=\"wp-image-218184\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Spatial distribution of global drylands and associated climate zones from 1994\u20132023 (a); percentage of each climate zone (b). (Cai et al., Environmental Research Letters, 2026)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Expansion of dryland climatic conditions into formerly more humid regions may aggravate water scarcity, ecosystem degradation and desertification, posing challenges to global sustainable development,&#8221; a team led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Forestry <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae9b29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the high ecological vulnerability of drylands, updated assessments of dryland extent and future redistribution are needed to support climate adaptation and sustainable development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the study, the researchers used updated climate modeling to map current global dryland distribution and project how they might spread in the future.<\/p>\n<p>For the analysis, drylands were defined using a measure called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aridity_index\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aridity index<\/a> (AI), which equates to a region&#8217;s precipitation divided by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potential_evapotranspiration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">potential evapotranspiration<\/a> (PET), with areas with an AI below 0.65 classified as drylands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/desert-landscape.jpg\" alt=\"Over 40% of Earth Could Be Drylands by Century's End, Projections Show\" class=\"wp-image-218187\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The researchers project that drylands of varying intensity will increase to cover up to 40.28 percent of Earth&#8217;s land during 2071\u20132100. (<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/the-sun-is-setting-over-a-desert-landscape-5vA9RWK60NE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sarabi Ramos\/Unsplash<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>One factor contributing to the variance we see in dryland projections is that rising atmospheric CO2 levels over time affect <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transpiration\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">plant transpiration<\/a>, with pores on plants called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stoma\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stomata<\/a> partially closing when CO2 levels are high.<\/p>\n<p>This means plants lose less water through transpiration overall, which in turn affects calculations using PET \u2013 but the team says it&#8217;s a factor that many previous studies haven&#8217;t accounted for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Conventional projections often neglect CO2 effects on potential evapotranspiration, which may yield higher aridity estimates and alter aridity-change hotspot patterns,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae9b29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the authors write<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In their own analysis, the researchers used a CO2-modified PET framework that incorporated historical meteorological data for 1960\u20132023 and climate models from the sixth phase of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coupled_Model_Intercomparison_Project\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coupled Model Intercomparison Project<\/a> (CMIP6).<\/p>\n<p>Their results suggest that, based on a baseline period of data from 1994\u20132023, drylands covered about 38.58 percent of Earth&#8217;s total land, not counting Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?int_promo=stargazing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788882973_739_FOMO-1200x628-_Dont-miss-the-next-breakthrough_-cosmic-colourful-642x336.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-201722\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Drylands come in four sub-types, with most of the world&#8217;s drylands being semi-arid zones (14.72 percent of terrestrial area per the team&#8217;s estimates), with arid zones, predominantly in Australia and China, accounting for 11.24 percent of Earth&#8217;s land.<\/p>\n<p>Dry sub-humid zones are extensive in China and Russia (6.35 percent), while Algeria, Libya, and Saudi Arabia all feature hyper-arid zones, which account for 6.27 percent of terrestrial coverage.<\/p>\n<p>In the future, the researchers project that drylands globally will increase to cover between 39.31 to 40.28 percent of Earth&#8217;s land during 2071\u20132100, depending on which greenhouse gas emissions scenario is used, with hyper-arid zones showing the largest increase.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/no-place-on-earth-is-safe-if-all-hell-breaks-loose-but-one-place-is-safer-than-the-rest\" data-type=\"2026\/08\/26\" data-id=\"215650\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No Place on Earth Is Safe if All Hell Breaks Loose, But One Place Is Safer Than The Rest<\/a><\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s a concerning trend, it&#8217;s worth noting the CO2-modified PET calculations used by the researchers put their figures significantly lower than some other estimates \u2013 one study a decade ago suggested drylands could cover up to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/nclimate2837\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">56 percent of Earth&#8217;s land by 2100<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the top estimate of 40.28 percent corresponds to a mind-boggling increase of 2.37 million square kilometers relative to the 1994\u20132023 baseline, which equates to a land grab the size of Algeria, or about 30 percent of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Australia, while the world&#8217;s driest inhabited continent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/no-place-on-earth-is-safe-if-all-hell-breaks-loose-but-one-place-is-safer-than-the-rest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">might be the ultimate bolt-hole<\/a> in a future calamity, it doesn&#8217;t fare well in dryland projections.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers predict Australia will face the most pronounced dryland changes this century, followed by Brazil, while parts of Africa are also expected to see widespread shifts.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/ae9b29\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Environmental Research Letters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This article was fact-checked by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rachel\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rachel Garner<\/a> and edited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/rebecca-dyer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rebecca Dyer<\/a>.
