With the Kansas City Chief<\/a>s starting the 2026 season on \u201cMonday Night Football,\u201d head coach Andy Reid\u2019s weekly Monday press conference shifted to Tuesday ahead of the team\u2019s first practice of the week on Thursday.<\/p>\n

That also delayed the unfortunate update Reid provided about starting left tackle Josh Simmons (Back), who has missed weeks of practice trying to recover from the preseason injury. After answering a few questions about the situation from local media, Reid got straight to the point about Simmons\u2019 status.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a good chance Josh doesn\u2019t play this week; that\u2019s where we\u2019re at,\u201d Reid told 810 Sports\u2019 Soren Petro during the press conference. \u201cSo we have that in our mind. He has an issue there that he is working through. I\u2019m not putting any time restraint on when he comes back or when he can practice and how many practices he needs. I just want to make sure he\u2019s healthy and okay to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before he reiterated the doubtful state of Simmons\u2019 injury, he shared his thoughts on what the offensive line would look like without Simmons.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf [Simmons is] not able to go, then we\u2019ll be in with Kahlil [Benson] at that spot, and we\u2019ll roll from there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe try to play the five best guys,\u201d Reid added. \u201cSo we make that decision on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the Arrowhead Pride staff has speculated during the preseason<\/a>, rookie offensive lineman Kahlil Benson\u2019s tools have impressed Kansas City enough to be considered one of the team\u2019s top linemen, regardless of position.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Reid sounds so firm on Benson filling in for Simmons, but he was not ready to confirm that Benson would be the direct substitute on the blindside. The rookie played only right tackle and guard in college.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not telling you that,\u201d Reid responded when pushed about Benson at left tackle. \u201cBut we\u2019re comfortable with Kahlil on either side; he has been playing the left side, so I feel comfortable with that. We\u2019ll end up playing the five best guys, and right now, he is one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he has to be the left tackle, then he\u2019s the left tackle,\u201d Reid added. \u201cAnd we roll with it. That\u2019s just how it goes.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Benson\u2019s preseason wasn\u2019t impressive on the surface, Reid sees a positive trait in the potential fill-in starter.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe normally doesn\u2019t make the same mistake twice, which I\u2019ve mentioned before,\u201d Reid said. \u201cThat\u2019s an important quality to have. He\u2019s tough, so it\u2019s just that he doesn\u2019t have a whole lot of reps under his belt at this level as a rookie, but he\u2019s very willing, and if he has to step in there and play \u2014 which it looks like he probably will \u2014 we feel comfortable with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

While we await an official practice designation for Simmons once practice begins this week, Reid emphasized that the second-year player is doing what it takes to return to the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cJosh is rehabbing; he\u2019s working his tail off,\u201d Reid shared. \u201cThis isn\u2019t anything other than having an issue with his back; it\u2019s just a matter of time here, but he continues to work hard with Rick and do his part there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reid also shared that rookie left tackle Diego Pounds, whom the team traded for a couple of weeks ago, is \u201cgetting used to what we do offensively.\u201d Reid remarked on Pounds\u2019 talent and willingness to work hard, but \u201cit\u2019s just a matter of him getting a little time under his belt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patrick Mahomes should be ready to roll<\/p>\n

Before Reid got into Simmons\u2019 status, he said everything but confirmed that starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes will take the field in Week 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a pretty good chance Patrick will go ahead and start, unless something were to come up here in the next couple of days,\u201d Reid said. \u201cMost likely, he will be the guy that\u2019s out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has shown everything there,\u201d Reid continued. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t missed a day\u2026 other than having a brace on his leg; everything looks normal. He\u2019s running around the same way he has always done and throwing the ball like he has always done. I think we\u2019ll be fine there.\u201d<\/p>\n
