James ended up in Philadelphia. The recruitment never gained traction, and there was no visible backup plan when it fell through.

Instead, Golden State protected its future. The veteran frontcourt trio of Draymond Green, Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis all came back on short, maneuverable deals. De’Anthony Melton was retained over a pursuit of Anfernee Simons. The draft-pick cupboard stayed full, and the books were lined up for an ocean of cap space a year or two from now. It is a sensible plan for a franchise that wants to be flexible. It is not a plan that makes the 2026-27 Warriors better than they were.

Before deciding whether that is a fade or a contrarian buy, compare the number across RG.org’s online sportsbooks hub. The title price is not where the action is. The runner-up, MVP and Rookie of the Year boards are.

Last Season Was Worse Than the Record Suggests

Golden State finished 37-45, 10th in the Western Conference, and reached the Play-In before bowing out. The numbers underneath were thoroughly average: an offensive rating of 115.0 (18th), a defensive rating of 115.6 (17th) and a net rating of minus-0.6 (20th).

The mitigating factor was health. Curry played 43 games and missed 27 with a right knee issue. Butler played 38 before tearing his right ACL, with the Warriors 25-19 at the time of his injury. Moses Moody had knee surgery in March. Porzingis, acquired midseason from Atlanta, appeared in just 15 games in a Golden State uniform. The whole season was a study in remaining brilliance and the availability problem.

The brilliance is real. Curry averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists on 46.8% shooting and 39.3% from three, launching 11.3 triples a night and making an All-Star team at 37. Butler, before he went down, was at 20.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists on 51.9% shooting with 7.6 free-throw attempts per game.

The availability problem is the whole bet. Curry is 38. Butler turns 37 in September. Green is 36, Horford is 40, and Porzingis is 31 with a chronic injury file. Five rotation players missed meaningful time last year, and nothing about an extra year of age makes that less likely to repeat. Calling the roster flawed is harsh, but it is not unfair.

BET NBA FUTURES AT FANDUELThe Butler Timeline Sets the Deadline Clock

Butler is targeting a January or February return, and the most recent rehab updates describe notable progress. That would put him roughly a year out from surgery right around the February trade deadline, which makes the deadline the single most important date on the Warriors’ calendar.

The logic runs like this. If Butler can get back on the floor in the weeks before the deadline and look like something close to his pre-injury self, Golden State has the co-star Curry needs and a reason to stand pat. If he cannot, or if he looks diminished at 37 after a major knee reconstruction, the front office has the flexibility to make the kind of deadline strike Washington and Utah pulled off last year, when Trae Young, Anthony Davis and Jaren Jackson Jr. all changed teams in February.

Either a loud Butler return or a significant trade appears to be the only route back into the real Western Conference conversation. Until one of those happens, this is a Play-In team with a Hall of Fame point guard.

Lendeborg Is the Only New Piece That Matters

The No. 11 pick is 23, older than Brandin Podziemski, and he arrives with a Summer League MVP award and a Michigan stat line of 15.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists on 52% from the field and 37% from three. The Warriors are counting on him as a high-minute rotation player from day one.

The likeliest rotation has Lendeborg at roughly 22 minutes a night as the backup power forward, playing alongside Horford and a three-guard group of Curry, Melton and Gary Payton II that forces turnovers and lets him run in transition. Green stays in the starting five, which is the only realistic outcome: Green has come off the bench seven times in 12 seasons and Steve Kerr, on a fresh contract, is not going to change that in October.

The interesting wrinkle is that Lendeborg and Green share a point-forward skill set, which means the rookie may be at his best when Green sits. If his perimeter defense holds up, the small-forward minutes currently earmarked for Will Richard and Payton are his to take by midseason.

Green, for his part, is the quiet concern. The Warriors’ defense was better with Green off the floor last season, only the second time that has happened in his career, and he allowed the highest shot quality as a closest defender he has ever posted. Whether that is the podcast, the age or a one-year blip, the Warriors’ defensive identity for a decade has been Green, and the numbers say that identity is fading.

Golden State Warriors Championship Odds

Here is where the US books have the Warriors, and how the number compares across markets.

MarketOddsSportsbookImplied ProbabilityNBA Champion 2026-27+5000Caesars1.96%NBA Champion 2026-27+6000BetRivers1.64%NBA Finals Runner-Up+6000FanDuel1.64%MVP – Stephen Curry+10000Caesars0.99%Rookie of the Year – Yaxel Lendeborg+2000BetRivers4.76%

Odds current as of Monday, Aug. 31. Futures move quickly once camps open, so check the live number on the best betting apps before committing.

Three things stand out. First, the 1,000-point spread between Caesars and BetRivers on the outright is the biggest line-shopping gap on the Warriors’ board. Anyone taking the ticket at all gets 20% more payout at +6000 than at +5000 on the identical outcome.

Second, FanDuel’s runner-up price is the same as BetRivers’ title price. Reaching the Finals is strictly easier than winning them, so +6000 to lose in June is a better-priced ticket than +6000 to win, even if neither is likely.

Third, Curry at +10000 for MVP is a market saying it does not believe he can play 65 games. He was 26.6 points on 39.3% from deep last year; the issue has never been production. On a Play-In team, though, MVP votes do not materialize regardless of the stat line, and that ticket is a novelty.

For context, Caesars has San Antonio at +260 and Oklahoma City at +280 at the top of the board, with Golden State at +5000 slotted behind Indiana (+4000) and just ahead of Houston (+5500), Atlanta (+6500) and Orlando (+8000). BetRivers has the Warriors level with the Magic at +6000 and behind the Lakers, Pacers and Rockets at +4000.

The Podziemski Question Is a Contract Question

Podziemski is the X factor, and the reason is as much about next summer as this season. He is due to hit restricted free agency in 2027 unless the Warriors extend him first, and his contract situation is already being tied to Curry’s timeline.

His production is steady rather than spectacular: 13.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists across all 82 games last season. He is Golden State’s youngest player other than second-round pick Lajae Jones. He is also an average NBA starter for three seasons running, which is precisely the kind of player a capped-out franchise cannot afford to lose and cannot afford to overpay.

The closing lineup of Curry, Podziemski, Gui Santos, Green and Porzingis posted a plus-63.5 net rating in a tiny sample last season. If that group stays healthy and stays together, Podziemski’s price goes up. That is good for the Warriors’ win total and awkward for the Warriors’ cap sheet.

SHOP NBA ODDS AT BETRIVERSFloor, Ceiling and the Third Scorer Problem

The floor is 34-38 wins if Curry misses extended time and Butler and Moody struggle with continuity. The ceiling is 46-48 wins with full availability and Porzingis spacing the floor properly. The safest forecast is 41-42 wins and another Play-In appearance. Power-index models and offseason power rankings both slot Golden State in the 18-to-19 range, which describes a team that finishes right around .500.

The structural problem is the third scorer. Curry at 26.6 and Butler at 20.0 are a real top two when both are healthy. After that it drops to Porzingis at 16.7 in 32 total games, Podziemski at 13.8, and a bench that outscored opponents 45.0 to 36.6 per game on a team that still ranked 18th in offense. The Warriors were outscored 50.8 to 45.0 in the paint, and nobody they added this summer fixes that.

The bench is a legitimate strength. Melton, Payton, Niang and a healthy Moody, who was at 12.1 points on 40.1% from three before his injury, give Kerr real depth. Depth wins regular-season games in a conference where Oklahoma City, Minnesota and the Lakers all shed rotation players this summer. It does not beat San Antonio in May.

Circle These DatesOct. 21 at Los Angeles Lakers — the opener at Crypto.com Arena, against a Lakers team that traded LeBron James and reshaped its roster.Oct. 23 vs. Memphis — the home opener at Chase Center, followed immediately by a three-game trip through Phoenix, Denver and Minnesota.Dec. 25 vs. Denver — the Christmas nightcap on ABC, Curry against Nikola Jokic, and Golden State’s annual holiday spotlight.Mar. 24 vs. Philadelphia — the first meeting with LeBron James and the 76ers, the star the Warriors tried to sign and could not.Apr. 11 vs. Utah — the season finale at home, and quite possibly a Play-In seeding game.

Golden State has 28 national television games and 15 back-to-back sets, with 23 home games in the first half of the schedule, per the full schedule breakdown. That front-loaded home slate matters for a team trying to stay above water until Butler returns.

Best Bets and Predicted Finish

Best Bet: Warriors under the regular-season win total, at any line of 42.5 or higher once totals post. The safest forecast is 41-42 wins, and that assumes Curry plays at least 60 games and Butler returns on schedule. The floor scenario is 34-38. The ceiling requires health this roster has not shown since 2022. The under is the position that survives the most outcomes.

Value play: Yaxel Lendeborg for Rookie of the Year at +2000 at BetRivers. He is the sixth choice on the board behind Cameron Boozer, Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, Caleb Wilson and Darius Acuff Jr. He is also 23, a Summer League MVP, and projected for 22 minutes on a team that desperately needs him to play. Rookie of the Year is a volume award, and volume is the one thing Lendeborg is guaranteed.

Longshot: Warriors to reach the Finals at +6000 at FanDuel. Only for anyone who believes in the deadline trade. The runner-up price matches the BetRivers title price for a strictly easier outcome, which makes it the better-shaped ticket for backing Golden State to make a run. A token stake, not a position.

Fade: Stephen Curry for MVP at +10000. The stat line justifies it. The team context, the games-played threshold and a Play-In ceiling do not. Curry needs 50 wins around him to get real votes, and this roster does not have 50 wins in it without Butler at full strength from October.

Predicted finish: 40-42, 9th in the Western Conference, a Play-In appearance, and a February decision that defines the last chapter of the Curry era. If Butler comes back healthy, Golden State is a nuisance nobody wants in the first round. If he does not, the ocean of cap space arrives a year early.

Before locking a futures ticket that will not settle until spring, review the full slate of US sportsbooks, compare current sportsbook promos, and for anyone betting from Illinois, where BetRivers posts the better outright price, check the rules for Illinois sports betting first.
