We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p>Your support makes all the difference.Read more<\/p>\n<p>Exposure to a bacterium responsible for a widespread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/stomach\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stomach<\/a> infection has been associated with a notable percentage of bowel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/cancer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cancer<\/a> cases, according to research.<\/p>\n<p>Helicobacter pylori <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bacteria\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bacteria<\/a>, commonly referred to as H. pylori, trigger a routine gastrointestinal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bug\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bug<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While the majority of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/infections\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">infections<\/a> pass without symptoms, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/patients\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">patients<\/a> develop ulcers or inflammation along the lining of their stomach.<\/p>\n<p>A substantial number of people are believed to contract the bug during childhood, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/transmission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transmission<\/a> occurring through direct contact with an infected individual\u2019s saliva, vomit or stool.<\/p>\n<p>Although H. pylori is already an established cause of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/stomach-cancer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stomach cancer<\/a>, researchers noted that its potential connection to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bowel-cancer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bowel cancer<\/a> remains &#8220;highly controversial&#8221; as they set out to evaluate the association.<\/p>\n<p>Data from the charity Guts UK indicates that as many as two in five individuals across the UK carry H. pylori within their digestive system.<\/p>\n<p>To investigate, an international group of experts co-led by academics at the University of Hong Kong and the University of California San Diego examined findings from extensive reviews of prior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/studies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studies<\/a> regarding germ exposure and bowel cancer, combining these with figures provided by the Global Cancer Observatory.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/iStock-2207857887.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"According to Guts UK, up to two in five people in the UK have H. pylori in their stomach\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE\"\/>According to Guts UK, up to two in five people in the UK have H. pylori in their stomach (Getty\/iStock)<\/p>\n<p>The analysis found that exposure to H. pylori is linked to a 1.59-fold increased risk of bowel cancer, compared to not being exposed to the bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>And using data from 43 studies, which involved more than 48 million people, they estimated that 22 per cent of bowel cancer cases worldwide are potentially related to H. pylori exposure.<\/p>\n<p>Only four studies included in the analysis looked H. pylori \u201ceradication\u201d with antibiotics and continued cancer risk, these suggested that clearing the infection could reduce bowel cancer risk, but only after 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also examined data on the proportion of bowel cancers linked to infection based on when people were born, with three age brackets included in the study \u2013 those born before 1947;
