Search over: Police locate man who walked off from court-committed treatment at Springfield Hospital<\/p>\n

Carrolltowne Elementary, Piney Ridge Elementary, Sykesville Middle schools were placed on ‘secure’ status<\/p>\n

Maryland State Police said a man who walked off from his court-ordered treatment Wednesday at Springfield Hospital Center has been found.<\/p>\n

Robert James Smith, 54, walked off from the Springfield Hospital Center around 11:30 a.m., prompting a large search effort, state police said.<\/p>\n

Shortly before 3:30 p.m., state police said Smith was found unharmed.<\/p>\n

Residents in the Sykesville area were told to stay inside, Carroll County officials wrote in an alert sent to the community. The alert stated that there was police activity in the area of the Springfield Hospital Center complex in Sykesville.<\/p>\n

Carroll County Public Schools told WBAL-TV 11 News that Carrolltowne Elementary, Piney Ridge Elementary and Sykesville Middle schools were placed on a “secure” status due to police in the area.<\/p>\n

The district explained in a statement: “Secure is standard response protocol used when there is an external situation in the area of the school. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the building until the situation has been resolved. There is no danger to the students or the staff of the school.
