NEW YORK \u2014 Anthony Volpe\u2019s transition to second base has mostly flown under the radar. The former New York Yankees starting shortstop, who won a Gold Glove as a rookie three years ago, has been away from the big-league spotlight, playing at Triple A in the wake of getting demoted<\/a> in early August.<\/p>\n

But the Yankees have liked what they have seen from the 25-year-old as he\u2019s taken to the new position, according to Ryan Hunt, the team\u2019s infield, outfield and base-running coordinator.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s excelled,\u201d Hunt told The Athletic before Wednesday\u2019s game against the Colorado Rockies at Yankee Stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything that you\u2019d expect from him in terms of being a professional, in terms of his work, in terms of his talent \u2014 I mean, we know what the skill set is, right? He doesn\u2019t get enough credit for the work he\u2019s put in to capitalize and maximize his own ability for what he\u2019s done at this point in his career.\u201d<\/p>\n

The renewed focus on Volpe comes after the Yankees said Wednesday that second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffered a sprained right thumb sliding into second base in Tuesday night\u2019s win over the Colorado Rockies. The club plans to shut Chisholm down from baseball activities for up to the next 10 days, and it\u2019s unclear whether he will return before the regular season ends Sept. 27.<\/p>\n

Volpe will rejoin the Yankees on Thursday, a source with knowledge of the Yankees\u2019 personnel decisions confirmed to The Athletic. The individual spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move is not yet official. The YES Network\u2019s Jack Curry first reported the news. The Yankees plan to put Chisholm on the injured list Thursday.<\/p>\n

Jos\u00e9 Caballero, 30, started at second base Wednesday in place of Chisholm.<\/p>\n

Volpe has played second base in 19 of 28 games since getting demoted to Triple A, committing just one error in 78 chances. He has also sprinkled in games at shortstop and third base.<\/p>\n

The Yankees believe he\u2019s ready to play second base in the majors.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know who he is and what he is and what his ability is,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cIt can translate to second base very quickly. It can translate to anywhere on the field and be an impactful defender. We have the utmost confidence of who he is and what he can be, and early on at second, he\u2019s excelled. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s a surprise to anyone who knows him or has been around him at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hunt added that Volpe has taken well to the slower pace of second base, compared with shortstop.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think from his style of play at shortstop, to where he has a very average arm and, at times, it can be pretty good,\u201d Hunt said. \u201cBut he\u2019s had to play fast in his career to make up for that, which he\u2019s done exceptionally well. But when you go over to second base, you have just a little bit more time. He\u2019s doing well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Volpe will form a double-play duo with George Lombard Jr., the Yankees\u2019 top prospect, who replaced Volpe.<\/p>\n

Offensively, Volpe has been excellent since the demotion. He\u2019s hit .284 (31 for 109) with 10 home runs and a 1.023 OPS. He\u2019s been especially good lately, posting a .388 batting average with six home runs and a 1.320 OPS in his last 13 games.<\/p>\n

Manager Aaron Boone spoke to reporters Tuesday before the Yankees decided to promote Volpe. He said Volpe has been \u201cdoing really well\u201d and that he believes Volpe can handle second base in the majors.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just know that I have a ton of respect for the person and the player,\u201d Boone said. \u201cI know he\u2019s been a complete pro, and he completely got after it down there in everything they have thrown at him, whether it\u2019s playing some second base, obviously introducing him to third base. Making sure his swing is dialed in. He\u2019s obviously swung the bat incredibly well.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not an easy thing to do when you\u2019ve been in the big leagues, and you\u2019ve got to go back,\u201d Boone added. \u201cI\u2019ve seen a lot of good players go there and not perform and struggle.
