CAMDEN, N.J (WPVI) — Officials in Camden, New Jersey, say illegal dumping remains a citywide problem, with reports this year already matching the total recorded in all of last year.

The Department of Public Works spends much of its time cleaning up illegally discarded waste, according to city officials, who say they are using cameras and drones to identify people responsible for dumping.

Officials are also encouraging residents to report problem areas.

Candice Robinson, who lives in Camden’s Fairview neighborhood, said illegal dumping regularly occurs behind her home.

“We see everything from paint cans to furniture, mattresses, people dump cabinets back there,” Robinson said.

She said many of those responsible may not live in the neighborhood.

“People who probably don’t even live in this neighborhood think that this is OK to dump their trash and things they no longer want where we reside,” Robinson said.

Neighbors have reported incidents through the city’s designated app, but residents say the dumping continues. City officials described the issue as a major challenge that has cost millions of dollars to address over the years.

“Those who think they can go against that and cut corners and throw trash out were doubling down on our efforts,” Mayor Vic Carstarphen said.

Police on Wednesday released information on 31 people charged with illegal dumping in Camden this year. Officials said 68 cases of illegal dumping have been reported so far in 2026, equaling the total number reported during all of 2025.

Police said a network of surveillance cameras, including movable units deployed in targeted areas, has captured footage of people dumping household trash, construction debris and other waste.

Councilwoman Jannette Ramos said residents have access to a free monthly bulk waste collection program.

“He mentioned the bulk waste collection. That happens once a month where residents, for free, can bring any type of bulk material to the site,” Ramos said.

Officials said those convicted of illegal dumping can face fines of up to $10,000 per incident. They added that the problem affects not only city finances but also residents’ quality of life.

“It cuts my budget short when I could be using it in other places — like open spaces for the kids, playground equipment,” Keith Walker said.

The city is offering rewards of up to $1,000 for information leading to arrests in illegal dumping cases. Officials also said they are working on additional initiatives, including providing every resident with a trash can by 2028 and launching a mattress recycling program.
