{"id":84271,"date":"2025-08-15T08:10:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-15T08:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/84271\/"},"modified":"2025-08-15T08:10:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T08:10:07","slug":"earliest-black-hole-ever-confirmed-could-explain-mysterious-red-dots-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/84271\/","title":{"rendered":"Earliest Black Hole Ever Confirmed Could Explain Mysterious Red Dots : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Astronomers have confirmed the earliest, most distant  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73020\" data-postid=\"171122\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">black hole<\/a> yet \u2013 and it&#8217;s surprisingly monstrous for its time.<\/p>\n<p>Residing in a galaxy called CAPERS-LRD-z9, it was already approximately 300 million times the mass of the Sun just 500 million years after the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/big-bang\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73033\" data-postid=\"171122\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Big Bang<\/a>, when the baby Universe was just 3 percent of its current age.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, this discovery sheds literal light on an ancient, mysterious class of celestial objects called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/3-years-after-jwsts-launch-heres-what-it-has-taught-us-about-the-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Little Red Dots<\/a> (LRDs), which are perplexingly bright, small, red objects in the early Universe. They appear around <a href=\"https:\/\/mcdonaldobservatory.org\/news\/releases\/20250114\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">600 million years<\/a> after the Big Bang then start disappearing less than a billion years later.<\/p>\n<p>LRDs have only recently been revealed by JWST&#8217;s unprecedented infrared ability to explore Cosmic Dawn, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/pushing-webb-to-its-limits-may-have-revealed-earliest-galaxies\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">universe&#8217;s earliest epochs<\/a>. These are also the Universe&#8217;s reddest epochs, as the light reaching JWST has been stretched to ever-redder wavelengths on its long journey through the expanding fabric of spacetime.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/36-billion-suns-record-black-hole-discovery-could-be-as-big-as-they-get\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">36 Billion Suns: Record Black Hole Discovery Could Be as Big as They Get<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The newly confirmed supermassive black hole at the heart of CAPERS-LRD-z9 is known as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/weve-just-seen-a-black-hole-dramatically-flare-to-life-in-the-far-reaches-of-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">active galactic nucleus<\/a> (AGN), the bright, rapidly feeding black hole at the center of a galaxy. It appears red because it&#8217;s enveloped in a glowing cocoon of gas and dust, which may make it a science-fiction-sounding &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/early-universe-s-little-red-dots-may-be-black-hole-stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">black hole star<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/black-hole-red-dots.jpg\" alt=\"The Earliest, Most Distant Black Hole Ever Confirmed May Show How Galaxies Are Born\" width=\"632\" height=\"256\" class=\"wp-image-171162 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>JWST reveals Little Red Dots at various redshifts. (<a href=\"https:\/\/mcdonaldobservatory.org\/news\/releases\/20250114\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\/ESA\/CSA\/STScI\/Dale Kocevski (Colby College)<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The gravity of this supermassive black hole is whipping the gas around it to mind-boggling speeds of around 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles) per second, or 1 percent the speed of light. These gassy winds are what help astronomers reveal the presence of  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/black-holes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73020\" data-postid=\"171122\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">black holes<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spectroscopy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spectroscopy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There aren&#8217;t many other things that create this signature,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utexas.edu\/2025\/08\/06\/meet-the-universes-earliest-confirmed-black-hole-a-monster-at-the-dawn-of-time\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explains<\/a> lead author Anthony Taylor, astrophysicist at the University of Texas at Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Spectroscopy splits incoming light into its wavelengths to yield a spectrum that reveals information about an object. In this case, the light waves from the gas around the black hole gets stretched and turns redder when it moves away from an observer. Conversely, light becomes compressed and bluer when it&#8217;s moving toward an observer. These changes reveal an object&#8217;s velocity.<\/p>\n<p>Importantly, the spectroscopic confirmation of CAPERS-LRD-z9 supports the idea that LRDs contain supermassive black holes, with &#8220;supermassive&#8221; being an understatement: some reach <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ade789\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 million solar masses<\/a> within their first billion years. For comparison, the supermassive black hole at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/magnetic-fingerprints-of-the-milky-ways-black-hole-revealed-in-stunning-image\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">core of the Milky Way<\/a> is about 4 million solar masses.<\/p>\n<p>The black holes at the heart of LRDs may not just be supermassive, but &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3847\/2041-8213\/ade789\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">overmassive<\/a>,&#8221; with mass ratios approaching 10 percent to 100 percent of their host galaxy&#8217;s stellar mass.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, at up to around 300 million solar masses, the supermassive black hole in CAPERS-LRD-z9 has the equivalent of about half the mass of all the stars in its galaxy. By contrast, more local galaxies may have central black holes that are only about 0.1 percent of their stellar mass.<\/p>\n<p>For added size perspective, CAPERS-LRD-z9 is so compact that not even JWST can resolve it. It seems to be, at most, 1,140 light-years wide \u2013 in the realm of the dwarf galaxies that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Satellite_galaxies_of_the_Milky_Way\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">orbit the Milky Way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/black-hole-seeds.jpg\" alt=\"The Earliest, Most Distant Black Hole Ever Confirmed May Show How Galaxies Are Born\" width=\"642\" height=\"620\" class=\"wp-image-171163 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Black hole mass compared to stellar mass in relation to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-redshift\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"111679\" data-postid=\"171122\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">redshift<\/a>. (Taylor et al., ApJL, 2025)<\/p>\n<p>The researchers say that there are <a href=\"https:\/\/aasnova.org\/2025\/08\/06\/distant-little-red-dot-hosts-a-huge-and-growing-black-hole\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two ways<\/a> for a black hole to grow so massive within just 500 million years of cosmic time. Both start with a big, heavy &#8220;seed&#8221; black hole growing at different rates.<\/p>\n<p>If it&#8217;s growing at the theoretical upper limit of black hole growth, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eddington_luminosity\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Eddington rate<\/a>, the seed might have started with around 10,000 solar masses.<\/p>\n<p>Or, it could have started off much smaller, at just 100 solar masses. That seed would have to grow even faster, at the super-Eddington rate, force-fed by gravity and the thick, dense envelope of gas around it.<\/p>\n<p>The seeds themselves may originate as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-early-universe-could-have-been-full-of-very-dark-holes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primordial black holes<\/a> produced when the Big Bang, well, banged. They may also form from the collapse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-red-dots-in-early-universe-could-be-seeds-of-supermassive-stars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Population III stars<\/a> (the elusive first stars to illuminate the cosmos), from &#8220;runaway collisions&#8221; in dense star clusters, or from the direct collapse of immense, primordial gas clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, it&#8217;s difficult to peer much farther in spacetime: &#8220;When looking for black holes, this is about as far back as you can practically go.
