LIMERICK TWP., Pa. (WPVI) — A historic warplane crashed Wednesday evening while attempting to land at an airport in Montgomery County.<\/p>\n
It happened around 7:15 p.m. at Heritage Field Airport on the 3300 block of West Ridge Pike in Limerick Township.<\/p>\n
Chopper 6 video showed the single-engine plane flipped upside down in a grassy area of the airport.<\/p>\n

After the crash, there was fuel leaking from one of the plane’s wings, so firefighters remained on the scene as crews worked to upright the plane.<\/p>\n
Officials say the pilot was the only person on board, but it’s unclear where he was coming from.<\/p>\n
According to Limerick Fire Department Chief Ken Shuler, the pilot was being removed from the wreckage when emergency crews arrived.<\/p>\n
The pilot was taken to a nearby hospital. Officials have not released information about the extent of the person’s injuries.<\/p>\n
“He seemed to be talking and everything when he left the scene here,” said Shuler.<\/p>\n
A local photographer shared video of the aircraft in the air, moments before the crash.<\/p>\n
FAA records show the plane that crashed is a “Harvard 3” variant of the historic T-6 from the World War II era. They were used by Allied forces to train combat pilots before they got into fighter planes.<\/p>\n
Federal records show this one was manufactured in 1944.<\/p>\n
It is currently sporting a paint scheme from the British Royal Navy, but is now privately owned and registered to a company in Bucks County.<\/p>\n
The aircraft was removed from the scene Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
The Township has also contacted both the FAA and the NTSB to investigate.<\/p>\n
