\n\tThis is one of the key moments in \u201cBe Brave,\u201d the documentary<\/a> dedicated to the OTB<\/a> Group founder that premiered out-of-competition at the Venice Film Festival<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n \n\tRosso pulled the same trick this time, as five Rosso \u201cdoppelgangers\u201d walked the red carpet ahead of the screening, along with the likes of Glenn Martens, Natasha Poly, Mich\u00e8le Lamy and Carlo Capasa, among others.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tMarco Pianigiani, director Francesco Carrozzini, Renzo Rosso<\/a>, Lorenzo Mieli and Roberto Beragnoli at the \u201cBe Brave\u201d screening.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty Images<\/p>\n \n\tThe move set the tone for what is an unconventional take on documentaries. As reported, the 85-minute film has been billed as the first movie to be fully created with AI, with its realization taking more than 18 months. It was directed by\u00a0Francesco Carrozzini,<\/a>\u00a0the son of late Vogue Italia editor in chief\u00a0Franca Sozzani<\/a>, whose works include the intimate documentary<\/a> \u201cFranca: Chaos and Creation\u201d on his mother and the environmental virtual reality film \u201cX-ray Fashion<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tTo tell Rosso\u2019s story, Carrozzini met and interviewed his family, friends, collaborators and celebrities \u2014 or did he?<\/p>\n \n\tDuring a press conference ahead of the premiere, Rosso said that everything was informed by AI, including the scenes where he appears. \u201cNot a single frame of me was shot,\u201d he quipped.<\/p>\n \n\tTo be sure, Carrozzini himself stars in the movie, and his voice guides viewers through a journey that blurs the lines of what is perceived as real archival footage and what is markedly created via AI.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cIt\u2019s interesting how you can\u2019t discern the moments, because that\u2019s also the fun of this film: the experimentation,\u201d said Carrozzini. \u201cIt embodies the soul of Renzo [Rosso], who\u2019s a disruptor.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tThe director explained the technology was applied \u201cmore or less on everything,\u201d from being used to create moments that never existed from scratch to being integrated into the many real interviews in the movie, ranging from designers such as John Galliano and Martens to Rosso\u2019s longtime collaborators Maurizio Marchiori and Johan Lindberg; cameos by Kim Kardashian and Bono, and family members spanning from Rosso\u2019s wife Arianna and brother Giuseppe to sons Stefano and Andrea.<\/p>\n \n\tCarrozzini said recreating specific human behaviors through AI was the most challenging technical part of this exercise.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tAsia Rosso, Arianna Alessi, Sydne Rosso, Renzo Rosso, Andrea Rosso, Stefano Rosso and India Rosso at the screening.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty Images<\/p>\n \n\tThe unconventional approach to the documentary genre is what convinced Rosso to greenlight the project.<\/p>\n \n\tRosso revealed that over the past five years many directors approached him with the offer of doing a documentary of his life but he\u2019s always declined so far. \u201cI was not interested in doing a movie on my life,\u201d he said. \u201cBut then [producer Lorenzo Mieli] explained to me all the steps and the technology behind what he had in mind and I said: that\u2019s really cool. I\u2019m [crazy] for technology,\u201d he added, reminding how he was the first to invest in companies such as Yoox or to launch a website for a fashion brand.<\/p>\n \n\tFor Rosso, technology doesn\u2019t substitute for the creativity of a designer. \u201cThe human being is fundamental. If you don\u2019t put [in a machinery] the values of a company, you can\u2019t do anything. And when the machinery gives you something, you have to be truly creative because you have to interact with it,\u201d he said, adding that AI \u201cis a great help because it incites you to think and come up with things you couldn\u2019t make otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tDirector Francesco Carrozzini and Renzo Rosso at the \u201cBe Brave\u201d photocall.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty Images<\/p>\n \n\tRosso enthused about the final result for \u201cBe Brave.\u201d He recalled how \u201cthere weren\u2019t images of me as a child\u201d but AI enabled the recreation of them, like many other moments punctuating the film.<\/p>\n \n\tThe movie\u2019s spark is 1996, when Diesel officially landed in the United States, the birthplace of denim, opening a store on Lexington Avenue opposite a Levi\u2019s unit.<\/p>\n \n\tIt\u2019s a moment foreshadowing the brand\u2019s success, before Carrozzini takes the narration back to Brugine, Rosso\u2019s little hometown in Italy\u2019s Veneto region and to his childhood in the countryside.
