What\u2019s with these homies dissing the Fonz<\/a>? Henry Winkler<\/a> is still processing what happened on the set of Turner & Hooch<\/a>; he originally signed on to direct the film, and after 13 days of filming, he got the boot. Jeffrey Katzenberg, then a studio executive at Paramount Pictures, hand-picked the Happy Days star for the job, but at the time, Winkler had a bad feeling about accepting it. \u201cOkay, so here is a lesson: When your instinct says, \u2018Uh-oh, danger! Warning sign!\u2019 You do not question your tummy. You can question your brain, but never your tummy,\u201d Winkler told Graham Bensinger<\/a> in a new interview. \u201cI went completely against my tummy, and it hit me in the face with a 2×4.\u201d Winkler began his search for the two top dogs of the movie, auditioning humans and \u201cpuppies\u201d alike, and landed on Tom Hanks and Mare Winningham for the two lead roles.<\/p>\n

But his directing style didn\u2019t seem to jive with Hanks. \u201cI, yes, at that time, being insecure, I talked too much, and I gave them direction \u2014what I thought was my job\u2014 and I wanted to do it over again, and apparently that pissed them off,\u201d he explained. Winkler was pulled into Katzenberg\u2019s office and told him it wasn\u2019t \u201cthe dailies\u201d \u2014 he was being fired. \u201cI then go to the set. I get my things. I drive home. I\u2019m fired as a director,\u201d he added. \u201cI don\u2019t handle it well. I\u2019m devastated.\u201d His relationship with Hanks has seemingly not recovered since. A Happy Days retrospective wanted to use footage with Hanks, who guest-starred in the series, but they \u201cdid not get permission,\u201d according to Winkler. \u201cI am still working on my perspective,\u201d he concluded, with an openness to repair the relationship if there was ever an opportunity to.<\/p>\n
