Image credit: Andrey Atuchin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe rarely find fossils of birds and even more rarely their feathers, giving us such important insight into the evolution of this key aspect of their biology,\u201d said Professor Gregory Wilson Mantilla, a researcher at the University of Washington and curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn top of that, these bird feathers found within a large fossilized dinosaur dung give us an incredible window into predator-prey interactions 66 million years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coprolite was discovered in 2016 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/paleontology\/adult-tyrannosaurus-rex-trackway-15056.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Hell Creek Formation<\/a> of Montana by Burke Museum paleontologist David DeMar Jr.<\/p>\n<p>The specimen was from a large predatory dinosaur, possibly a Tyrannosaurus rex or a Nanotyrannus.<\/p>\n<p>It contained multiple feathers, fish scales from a gar, and bones from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sci.news\/paleontology\/cretaceous-bird-nesting-polar-latitudes-13949.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hesperornithiform<\/a>, an extinct, loon-like diving bird.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers reasoned that the feathers must have also come from the same bird.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially, these are the first hesperornithiform feathers ever identified, and they appear to represent an evolutionary middle ground \u2014 some feathers looked modern and waterproof, while others were smaller, fuzzy and primitive, resembling those of earlier dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sci.news\/images\/enlarge14\/image_15058_2e-Hesperornithiform-Feathers.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111698\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-111698 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image_15058_2-Hesperornithiform-Feathers.jpg\" alt=\"The fossilized feather of a hesperornithiform bird exposed on the surface of the 66-million-year-old coprolite. Image credit: O\u2019Connor et al., doi: 10.1016\/j.cub.2026.08.054.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo of the feathers, including the one exposed at the surface of the coprolite, have features found only in those of living birds \u2014 and their immediate ancestors,\u201d Dr. DeMar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes a square feather shaft with a sponge-like center. No other Mesozoic feather has this combination of features.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next oldest record of this sponge-like center is from the Early Eocene of Denmark, which is about 10 million years younger than this new feather record from the Hell Creek Formation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hesperornithiforms are close cousins of the birds that survived the end-Cretaceous mass extinction and still live today.<\/p>\n<p>Some paleontologists have hypothesized that the birds that survived did so because they lived near water, and something about this habitat helped buffer them from the effects of the mass extinction.<\/p>\n<p>But the hesperornithiforms also lived by water, and they went extinct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think the types of feathers that these birds had, and\/or the way they molted those feathers, may have been one of the underlying causes of the selectivity of the end-Cretaceous mass extinction \u2014 essentially, why some birds died out and why others survived,\u201d said Dr. Jingmai O\u2019Connor, associate curator of fossil reptiles at the Field Museum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of these diving birds\u2019 feathers seem to have been modern-looking and waterproof, but they also had some smaller fuzzy, primitive body feathers that we associate with dinosaurs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/abstract\/S0960-9822(26)01105-X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">paper<\/a> was published today in the journal Current Biology.<\/p>\n<p>_____<\/p>\n<p>Jingmai K.
