Aaron Rodgers opened up about his relationship with Shailene Woodley in a new interview. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback, 42, explained why they ended their engagement after nearly two years together.

“I proposed to Shailene and she said yes. Now, she maybe felt like she was forced to make a decision. She could have said no,” he told teammate Cam Heyward on the latest episode of his “Not Just Football” podcast. “A couple days after that she tells me, ‘Before we get married, I gotta go fuck this guy.'”

Rodgers and Woodley began dating in 2020, and he popped the question that same year, though the couple didn’t confirm their engagement until 2021.

“Her story is that I ruined her life and gave her crazy depression because I left her,” he continued. “But in actuality, she told me that and then she took off the ring by March—I proposed in December—and we had a couple of times where we tried to [reunite] and nothing ever happened.”

Rodgers and Woodley reportedly ended their engagement in 2022, but by then, the athlete claimed that “there wasn’t even a relationship to break off.”

“She literally told me, ‘I don’t want to be with you’ after we tried some reconciliation in 2021. There’s just a lot of narrative out there that isn’t true,” he said.

In 2024, Rodgers announced that he was in a relationship with a woman named Brittani, and they tied the knot in early 2025. In the same podcast episode, Rodgers said that he regrets not marrying her sooner.

“In 2017 I met my wife, and at the time, she was leaving the States and going back to Europe. And my biggest regret is not begging her to stay or proposing right there, because that sent me right there into a tailspin of what can I be accused of as a partner in a relationship,” he explained.
