With that determination, our investigators moved quickly,\u201d Chief RaShall Brackney said at a Friday news conference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxhlbn7000c3b6r22jr1x0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Police secured two search warrants and an arrest warrant for the man, according to Brackney. After being unable to locate the man at the search warrant location, officers returning to police headquarters arrested the suspect as he was walking along a city street, she said. More arrest warrants could be served in connection with the case, the chief said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxhtmsp001d3b6rgn4zt9qk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat arrest today is an important development in this investigation but it is not the conclusion,\u201d Brackney said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxi0nqn002d3b6rgkoa27r9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The chief said Fortune was found in a \u201changing position\u201d with \u201cvarious states of decomposition of her body\u201d on August 3.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxhktwt001e356qntsk3bfx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fortune\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/11\/us\/mississippi-woman-hanging\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death<\/a> shook her family and community\u202fin Mississippi, where two other people have been found hanging from trees in less than a year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxhgbwj0013356qx8xulhu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The investigation into Fortune\u2019s death comes less than a year after the hanging deaths of 21-year-old<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/17\/us\/mississippi-hanging-delta-state-university-black-student-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Trey Reed<\/a>, a Black student at Delta State University in Cleveland, and Cory Zukatis, an unhoused white man in his 30s, in Vicksburg, according to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/11\/us\/mississippi-woman-hanging\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press<\/a>. Both deaths were determined by authorities to be suicides.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxhwpxl001s3b6rqoiwlpix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jackson police interviewed nearly 15 people, collected forensic evidence and followed leads in the case. Brackney said the investigation into Fortune\u2019s death remains active.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxhv9sc001l3b6rz1byf8e4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is not closure.
