While previous research linked it to metabolic benefits, little was known about how it could affect skeletal muscle.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_food-drink_article_main-content_article-body_6_8292250\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/popular-summer-fruit-has-edible-part-most-people-throw-away-usda-reveals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">POPULAR SUMMER FRUIT HAS AN EDIBLE PART MOST PEOPLE THROW AWAY, USDA REVEALS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The new findings, published Sept. 1 in the journal Food Bioscience, suggest that pterostilbene reduced abnormal fat buildup by encouraging cells to break down fat already stored in the cells. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Too much <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_food-drink_article_main-content_article-body_6_8292251\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">fat inside muscle cells<\/a> can interfere with how the body uses glucose and fatty acids and may contribute to insulin resistance.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;Our findings establish a scientific framework for developing <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_food-drink_article_main-content_article-body_6_8292252\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">functional foods<\/a> and nutritional supplements that target muscle fat metabolism,&#8221; lead researcher Takakazu Mitani, an associate professor at Shinshu University, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_food-drink_article_main-content_article-body_6_8292253\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/seaweed-based-coating-keep-strawberries-fresh-days-without-refrigeration-study-finds#&amp;_intcmp=fnc_category_category_main-content_article-list_1_2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SEAWEED-BASED COATING COULD KEEP STRAWBERRIES FRESH FOR DAYS WITHOUT REFRIGERATION, STUDY FINDS<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The team screened several food-derived compounds in the cells and found that pterostilbene caused the strongest reduction in fat accumulation without disrupting muscle growth.
