As a result, one of the pilots, dubbed \u201cBravo,\u201d agreed to sit for an on-camera interview and discuss his experience, while the other, \u201cAlpha,\u201d declined to take part in the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00033b6rhblzo2ku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two crew members have not been publicly identified by the Pentagon, and CNN could not independently identify them to seek comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00043b6rrv8e2ri1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The episode underscores how Hegseth\u2019s office is working to craft the narrative around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/middleeast\/iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Iran war<\/a>, which has become increasingly unpopular and put pressure on the secretary to claim victory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00053b6r5mjs1u7g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It also shows how Hegseth has played an unusually hands-on role in that effort \u2014 engaging in the planning process for the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview far more than is typical for a Defense Secretary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00063b6rcs4shf7q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis entire story is a complete lie,\u201d chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said when asked about CNN\u2019s reporting on plans for the segment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00073b6r96y4y017@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe decision to participate in the interview was each pilot\u2019s alone \u2014 because it is their story,\u201d he added. \u201cAs CNN notes, one pilot decided to participate and one did not. Additionally, the Department took great care to ensure operational security, sources, and methods were protected. To suggest otherwise is to denigrate every member of our military who participated in and supported the interview.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00083b6rx2qkhu5r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many major news outlets, including CNN, were eager to interview the pilots earlier this year, and the media competition was intense. At CBS, producer Keith Sharman, a 25-year veteran of \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d reached out to longtime US military contacts on the day of the rescue to start pursuing an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov00093b6rd4t8myff@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lobbying effort went all the way to the top. Soon after the rescue, CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss told journalists in her newsroom that the bookings of the crew members were \u201ctop priorities,\u201d and she personally lobbied Hegseth to give CBS exclusive access, three sources at the network said. Weiss also reached out to other Trump administration officials.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000a3b6r35ix9r32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth and members of his staff were very enthusiastic to broadcast a dramatic retelling of the incident with both crew members, three of the sources familiar with the production of the episode said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000b3b6riffb446x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the process still took several months. Sharman and correspondent Norah O\u2019Donnell, who ultimately secured the interview, originally pitched a story for the previous season of \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d which ended in May.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000c3b6r08os6q9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then CBS was consumed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/01\/media\/scott-pelley-nick-bilton-60-minutes-cbs-bari-weiss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">internal strife<\/a>. Weiss forced out several \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondents and producers and installed a new executive producer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/29\/media\/60-minutes-cbs-news-nick-bilton-bari-weiss\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nick Bilton<\/a>, prompting weeks of critical news coverage.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000d3b6r48a2ozyk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With Weiss and Bilton under pressure to prove that the new iteration of \u201c60 Minutes\u201d would still deliver exclusive and impactful reports, the sit-down with the crew members was even more valuable to CBS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000e3b6r2ruhrne0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A CBS spokesperson declined to comment for this story.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000g3b6riw7renjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Pentagon, regardless of political party in power, has historically worked to frame retelling of incidents of military heroism \u2014 there\u2019s even an office set up specifically to work with Hollywood productions. But the push for detail during an ongoing campaign concerned military officials, according to three sources.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000h3b6rov1150xr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sunday\u2019s show has been previewed as the inside story of the US rescue operation that extracted the two F-15 crew members from Iran.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000i3b6rb5070gq6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The pilot of the plane was found in the immediate hours after the plane was shot down by Iranian forces. But the second crew member, a weapons system officer, spent more than a day evading capture by encroaching Iranian forces. At one point, he scaled the rugged terrain to a ridgeline 7,000 feet above sea level, equipped with little more than a pistol, a communication device and a tracking beacon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000j3b6rm1h0sji9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The airman was rescued by a team of American commandos, accompanied by US aircraft dropping bombs to clear the area.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000k3b6ra4z8lgcx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That crew member decided to sit for an interview after Hegseth gave the two the choice of participating or not. The pilot declined.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000l3b6r1ayoi004@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Uniformed service members have voiced concern that the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d presentation is an effort by Hegseth\u2019s office to use the heroism demonstrated by US troops as part of a successful rescue operation for political purposes, two of the sources said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000m3b6rhn2e093j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition to concerns that the aircrew was hesitant about taking part in the CBS report, members of the military were also wary about potentially revealing classified specifics of the rescue mission itself \u2014 particularly while US forces are still engaged in active combat operations against Iran, multiple sources added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000n3b6rwj81v799@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But political appointees within Hegseth\u2019s office insisted the interview go forward despite reservations voiced by the military the chain of command, the sources told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000o3b6rozqffzeg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, shared some concerns about the possibility that the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview could, even inadvertently, disclose military tactics to the enemy but decided to participate in the segment nonetheless, according to one of the sources familiar with the production process.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000p3b6r2mvby4jw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A spokesman for Caine, Joseph Holstead, said that he would not \u201ccomment on agenda-driven sources, anonymous sources\u2019 characterizations, other than to reiterate the story here remains that the Joint Force will do everything possible to ensure no one gets left behind.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000r3b6rvf7ydvz6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A key part of Weiss and the CBS team\u2019s pitch to the Pentagon involved the huge platform of \u201c60 Minutes,\u201d the most-watched news program on US television.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000s3b6rrji8pxyq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After the shock of the summertime firings wore off, Bilton and the remaining staffers faced a deadline of September 13, the date of the first scheduled episode of the new \u201c60 Minutes\u201d season.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothov000t3b6r5bowzpvl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weiss and Bilton hoped to have the Iran rescue story for the season premiere. But inside CBS, the interview with the pilot was not confirmed until mid-July, and even then, there was a chance it would fall through. The sit-down was taped in mid-August.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothow000u3b6rrp6sx791@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Early in the pursuit of the interview, Weiss leaned on a past connection she had with Hegseth, whom she personally booked for a CBS interview on the January day that the ex-Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife were seized by US forces.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothow000v3b6r0ujdupgn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One of the CBS sources said Weiss sought to build on her relationship with Hegseth in pursuit of the airmen story. Bilton also spoke to Hegseth and Washington sources in an effort to land the interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyr6bmc00013b6ry83mqfpp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She remained in touch with Hegseth as the episode came together, two sources said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothow000x3b6rn0xkbvdu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Inside the Pentagon, Tami Radabaugh, who worked as Hegseth\u2019s TV producer at Fox News before moving with him to the Defense Department as a senior adviser, was primarily responsible for orchestrating the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d presentation, the sources said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothow000y3b6rxewk34uk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hegseth, himself, granted a rare interview for the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d broadcast, according to a preview clip released by CBS.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothow000z3b6rcwgrirh3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The network\u2019s first sneak peek of the segment showed \u201cBravo\u201d sitting silently while O\u2019Donnell asked him, \u201cDid you ever have any doubt that the US military was coming for you?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyothow00103b6r4z69twib@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Then the narrator intoned, \u201cDude 44 Bravo.
