{"id":846621,"date":"2026-09-13T18:16:11","date_gmt":"2026-09-13T18:16:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/846621\/"},"modified":"2026-09-13T18:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-13T18:16:11","slug":"a-pink-addition-to-your-sleep-can-help-wash-out-your-brain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/846621\/","title":{"rendered":"A pink addition to your sleep can help wash out your brain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Think pink for better sleep and extra brain benefits.<\/p>\n<p>While research is mixed about the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/02\/02\/health\/popular-background-noise-could-compromise-your-sleep-quality\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">benefits of background noise during sleep<\/a>, many have added apps and ambient sound machines to nighttime routines for reduced clamor and improved rest.<\/p>\n<p>And our brains could see a big benefit with sound machines \u2014 and one type of static noise in particular \u2014 helping give our noggins a good cleaning out.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"40795842\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/140930843.jpg\" alt=\"A woman sleeping on her side in a bed with pink sheets and a knitted blanket.\" class=\"wp-image-40795842\"\/>Noise machines during sleep are increasingly popular, and one type of static noise could provide some big brain benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the day, our brains accumulate waste and toxins (like lactic acid\u00a0and worn-out proteins) that can be harmful if left to build up.<\/p>\n<p>However, the brain\u2019s glymphatic system uses waves of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to flush out waste, a process that conveniently happens during deep, non-REM sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Without this \u201cclean-up,\u201d waste and toxins can trigger inflammation, disrupt communication between brain cells and eventually lead to neuron damage.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.aea5469\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">recent study<\/a> from MIT has found that tiny bursts of \u201cpink noise\u201d during sleep can increase the\u00a0amplitude of\u00a0slow\u00a0electrical waves, which strengthens CSF waves.<\/p>\n<p>Like white noise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/sleep-disorders\/pink-noise-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pink noise<\/a> is a steady background noise, often similar to ambient noise.<\/p>\n<p>Pink noise, however, uses deeper sounds and lower frequencies to create a more even, flat sound, like steady rain or a distant waterfall.<\/p>\n<p>The team behind the study wanted to explore\u00a0the relationship between brain waves and CSF\u00a0flow, and determine if manipulating the brain waves could enhance cerebrospinal fluid flow.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.20046893;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"   data-modal-image=\"40795844\" width=\"708\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/woman-enjoying-music-blissfully-140930720.jpg\" alt=\"A Hispanic woman with curly hair, red lipstick, and closed eyes enjoys music through headphones against a pink background.\" class=\"wp-image-40795844\"\/>Pink noise during sleep was found to increase cerebrospinal fluid waves that flush out waste and toxins from the brain. Rawpixel.com \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Earlier research has shown that auditory stimuli played at the peak of slow waves that occur during deep sleep can deepen CSF waves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimilar to\u00a0a child on a swing, if you push them when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0at the right moment in their movement, you can make that swing go farther,\u201d senior study author Laura Lewis said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1143370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">press release<\/a>. \u201cThe challenge is:\u00a0How do you find just the right time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Testing 14 healthy participants, researchers delivered a 50-millisecond burst of pink noise at the slow wave peaks.<\/p>\n<p>While the burst of noise wasn\u2019t loud enough to wake the participants, it did increase the amplitude\u00a0of both the slow electrical\u00a0waves and the CSF waves during sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also discovered that the slow waves stimulated blood vessels to constrict and widen, acting as a pump to drive out CSF from the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, the buildup of waste and toxins has been linked to cognitive decline, memory loss and neurodegenerative diseases such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/13\/health\/us-dementia-cases-predicted-to-double-by-2060-new-study\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The research team is hopeful that the findings of this study lead to more studies on increased CSF flow for improved sleep.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the potential to look further into how these brain waves play a role in the removal of waste from the brains of those with Alzheimer\u2019s and other diseases characterized by the buildup of harmful proteins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow\u00a0that we can enhance CSF flow during sleep in\u00a0healthy\u00a0adults,\u00a0we\u2019re really excited to bring\u00a0this technology\u00a0to clinical populations to see what effects we can have,\u201d Lewis said.<\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s lead author, Joshua Levitt, has also started a company that hopes to develop a wearable device that would increase CSF flow by delivering an auditory stimulus at the right time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Think pink for better sleep and extra brain benefits.
