Spider-Noir was always a risky project to greenlight, but Sony and Amazon MGM Studios decided to bet on it either way. The show marked a darker take on a usually light-hearted character, and instead of watching Peter Parker save the day, audiences witnessed Ben Reilly slowly relearn how to be a hero. On the one hand, the leap of faith proved to be worth it, as this noir mystery story was released to outstanding critical success. It even broke a record by becoming the most awarded Marvel show ever<\/a> at the Emmys. On the downside, it’s very likely that the project didn’t manage to break even.<\/p>\n

Spider-Noir had a reported budget of $400 million. For comparison, Avengers: Endgame\u2014a massive crossover project that starred many heroes such as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor\u2014had an estimated budget between $356 million and $400 million. Part of the reason the wall-crawler’s live-action series was so expensive to produce was that it needed a year’s worth of reshoots to ensure the episodes could also be seen in the True-Hue Full Color format, alongside Authentic Black & White.<\/p>\n

Spider-Noir was viewed for a total of 2.6 billion minutes<\/a> during its first six weeks on air. On paper, this number could seem like a massive success. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that the viewership was distributed across a total of eight episodes. For reference, the first season of Loki was viewed 3.39 billion minutes<\/a> during its first six weeks, and it managed to reach such a record with just six episodes. Unfortunately, this resulted in Spider-Noir’s cancellation, but it seems Sony and Amazon MGM Studios don’t have any intention of backing down from the superhero fantasy.<\/p>\n

One or two new Spider-Man shows will reportedly be greenlit after the cancellation of Spider-Noir<\/p>\n

According to a report by entertainment outlet The Ankler<\/a>, Sony and Amazon MGM Studios are developing four different scripts for a new Spider-Man<\/a> TV series, with the following writers working on them: Ben H. Winters (Legion), Alison Tatlock (Stranger Things), Megan McDonnell (WandaVision), Kelvin Yu (American Born Chinese), and Ben Nedivi & Matt Wolpert (The Umbrella Academy).<\/p>\n

The intention will be to greenlight at least one or two of these projects, which are likely to star different Spider-Man variants. Speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar<\/a>) in April, Spider-Noir showrunner Oren Uziel revealed that these other shows will also feature a genre that best fits their titular characters:<\/p>\n

“I’m focused on\u00a0Spider-Noir,\u00a0but I know there are others in the works. I’ve talked a bit to the people working on them, and I think they are very exciting. They’re following a little bit of that same formula, that same idea of taking a genre and elevating it by putting a Spider-variant into it. It opens up a whole new world, and it’s just an extremely exciting opportunity.”<\/p>\n

Spider-Man is a hero with a rich comic-book background that encompasses many universes and characters. However, there are a few variants of the wall-crawler who are a little more popular than others. With that in mind, it’s likely that Sony and Amazon MGM Studios will pivot to a well-known character, potentially resulting in even higher ratings.<\/p>\n

Miles Morales, Ghost Spider (or Spider-Gwen), Miguel O’Hara, and Cindy Moon are some of the biggest Spider-Man names aside from Peter Parker. Interestingly, the latter was also supposed to have her own standalone series developed by Amazon, but the project was ultimately axed. However, there’s a chance that Cindy’s story will be revisited moving forward.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most obvious choice is Miles Morales, although Tom Holland has stated that he already knows “when”<\/a> (not if) the character is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe<\/a>. If there’s a version of Miles swinging across New York’s skyline on the big screen, it’s unlikely that a different actor will portray the same role in a live-action show. That means Ghost Spider could be one of the Spider-variants best suited for a series developed by Sony and Amazon MGM Studios.<\/p>\n

Until an official announcement comes from Marvel<\/a>, it’s best to assume that Spider-Man’s future on the small screen has come to an end. However, it isn’t far-fetched to assume the studios behind the production of Spider-Noir learned from the show’s successes and failures to make even more successful projects in the future (which won’t need a $400 million budget this time around).<\/p>\n
