Donald Trump<\/a> on Sunday doubled down on his controversial pledge to give US adults a $5,000 \u201cdividend\u201d if his Republican \u2060party keeps control of Congress after November\u2019s midterm elections.<\/p>\n

The plan has been greeted with expressions of incredulity across the US political spectrum as well as outraged accusations of seeking to bribe voters<\/a>. The plan \u2013 which would cost more than a trillion dollars \u2013 also comes amid huge concern over the US national debt, which topped $40tn for the first time<\/a> in August.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t \u200cknow but \u200cit\u2019s easy if the \u200cRepublicans win. $5,000 to all adults in the country and we can easily handle that because we\u2019re taking in \u200cso much money,\u201d Trump told reporters in Ireland where he is on a visit to a golf course.<\/p>\n

Trump had been asked if \u200bCongress would need to approve the $5,000 pledge and continued: \u201cThe Democrats<\/a> can\u2019t make that pledge \u2060because it would all go to \u200bhell \u200bright away, \u200bwe\u2019d go into a \u200bdepression \u2026 \u200cI made \u200bthat pledge, \u200bI always keep my pledge.\u201d<\/p>\n

The US has roughly 240 million adult citizens, suggesting a cost of $1.2tn. The federal government spent about $7tn in fiscal year 2025, with about $2tn taken on as debt.<\/p>\n

When the plan was first touted by Trump last week at a rally in Texas, Marc Goldwein of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget wrote on X: \u201cThe result would be a huge spike in the deficit, and almost certainly in the inflation rate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic political leaders also reacted with a mix of outrage, disbelief and condemnation to the remarkable suggestion, which comes at a time when Trump is struggling with low poll numbers and a disastrous conflict in Iran, which is having an impact on the health of the US economy.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter making you sicker and poorer with his war, Donald Trump<\/a> now wants to buy your vote with $5,000 in taxpayer-funded blood money,\u201d said California governor, Gavin Newsom. \u201cThe most corrupt man ever to occupy the Oval Office.\u201d<\/p>\n

But some Republicans have backed the idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will get a bill ready so that we can get the Trump Dividend passed immediately after the November 3rd election,\u201d said US senator Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican, in a social media post on X.<\/p>\n

Any such payment would need \u200cto be approved by Congress and on Sunday Mike Johnson, the House speaker and a Louisiana Republican, told CNN: \u201cOf course, the devil\u2019s in the \u200cdetails. We have to figure all that out.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Democratic politicians on Sunday morning talkshows in the US dismissed the idea. Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader, told ABC\u2019s This Week that the plan is not a \u201cserious proposal\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n
