AI is developing faster and faster and could outrun humans\u2019 ability to manage it, he wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyudwdh000m3b6rgkqdarty@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLeft unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems, and so must be pursued very carefully, if at all,\u201d Amodei wrote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyuiv7u001b3b6ra9tdv4rl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The call for action comes just days after a former engineer at Amodei\u2019s company went even further, saying AI could bring about the end of humanity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh429e00033b6rzmfaeh9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/09\/tech\/ai-anthropic-safety\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said Jacob Coxon<\/a>, who had worked at both OpenAI and Anthropic before he posted his viral warning on social media.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtyubgx900073b6rdnqno9us@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Nobody knows how exactly AI would end humanity, as Coxon explained to CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ao4000j3b6r9j0h3epw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The argument is that AI is getting smarter all the time and will soon make itself smarter on its own, be able to outwit humans and unleash \u2026 something. Hack nuclear weapons? Let loose a devastating virus? Plunge the world into darkness? Create a lame society in which unfulfilled people can\u2019t find work? Take your pick.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry0000m3b6r58gllmkn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It should be comforting, maybe, that while the Pentagon is relying on artificial intelligence, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has said, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/07\/politics\/us-military-ai-law-iran\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI is not making lethal decisions<\/a>.\u201d Beyond that, the law does not place explicit limits on where AI can be used in the so-called kill chain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry0000n3b6rkj9rm3jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coxon\u2019s message was amplified by public interest groups and lawmakers looking to heed the advice of the AI companies that want the government to impose a framework and limits on how AI is developed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry0000o3b6r9zt0ayho@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI have publicly called for the government to regulate them so it can slow down their current race for AI domination, which coincides with their race to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/01\/tech\/anthropic-ipo-filing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">initial public offerings<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry1000p3b6rjxjksmvv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What we\u2019re seeing is \u201ca very small and powerful group of companies, linked arms together, running toward what they say is a cliff they cannot seem to stop themselves from running off,\u201d the tech journalist and CNN contributor Jacob Ward told CNN\u2019s Kasie Hunt on Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry1000q3b6rzfktnc0j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He argued that calls from these people who are in the process of making a lot of money should not be ignored.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry1000r3b6rm97p7y91@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are saying, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re building this thing, and it\u2019s exciting, but it might not just cost you your job, but your life.\u2019 I think it is important that we start paying attention,\u201d Ward said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry1000s3b6r8btd5w98@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among those calling for government action is Sen. Bernie Sanders, who takes the warnings seriously.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry1000t3b6r8oykldc9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNearly every day, there is a frightening new story about how Big Tech companies are losing control of the technology they are developing, with potentially cataclysmic results,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sanders.senate.gov\/press-releases\/news-sanders-casar-introduce-legislation-to-ban-artificial-superintelligence-and-temporarily-pause-advanced-ai-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sanders said<\/a> in announcing proposed legislation to ban artificial superintelligence. \u201cIt is irresponsible for society to allow them to move forward and make these products even more advanced.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh6ry1000u3b6rqssuqgl8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sanders also talked about his proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/audio\/podcasts\/the-source-with-kaitlan-collins\/episodes\/0b99f2d6-b544-11f0-923c-0bd0c50d1301\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">with CNN\u2019s Kaitlan Collins<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/gettyimages-2203839349.jpg\" alt=\"David Sacks, President Donald Trump's AI and crypto czar, speaks to press outside of the White House on March 7, 2025, in Washington, DC.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2001\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh7mzp000w3b6r4c6x793q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            David Sacks, a tech investor who is also co-chair of President Trump\u2019s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/02\/politics\/artificial-intelligence-maga-divide-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pushed in the other direction<\/a>, toward an open market-based approach to AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am600143b6ru8ll59p5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Appearing on Fox News Thursday, Sacks questioned Coxon\u2019s motivations and seeded the idea that his warning was part of a conspiracy by \u201cdoomers,\u201d maybe financed by China, to thwart AI innovation in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtzwbois00003b6ry4eyay0y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Saturday, President Donald Trump echoed that sentiment, saying during a news briefing in Ireland that people worried about the ultimate impacts of AI \u201care bringing up things that won\u2019t happen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtzwgpdb000s3b6rbysya55g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Asked whether the industry needs to be regulated, Trump said repeated his earlier statement about competing with China.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtzwig8b000z3b6rlawp462x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re leading China in AI,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re the most sophisticated country in the world, and frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI wins. And we can put guard rails.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am600153b6rl2d0rmwh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sacks is among those who argued American companies must continue to innovate rather than allow China to achieve AI supremacy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am600163b6rtnr9whqe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey don\u2019t have this giant influence operation of these doomer groups in China,\u201d Sacks told Fox News\u2019 Bret Baier. \u201cWhat we have here in the US, though, is we have this huge media campaign against AI and it is turning the public against AI.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am600173b6rjhp91kzj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sacks added of China: \u201cThey would love for us to stop AI development over here.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am600183b6r3001aaao@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a video from his \u201cAll-In\u201d podcast, which Sacks posted to his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidSacks\/status\/2096335558708797584?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">account on X<\/a>, he argued the AI companies want regulation so that they can effectively control AI. He called it a \u201cfrontier market duopoly.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am600193b6r5e4fkwus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Government officials aren\u2019t going to have any idea how to regulate AI, he argued.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001a3b6rt355fsbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSo they\u2019re going to turn to the leading labs to say, \u2018Hey, how should we regulate it?\u2019 And of course, Anthropic is going to have all the answers on that,\u201d he said, suggesting warnings of AI run amok are part of a play for market domination.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001b3b6rjmi4bub5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Rather than push the idea that AI has the potential to end humanity, Sacks sees a conspiracy to place power over AI in a few select hands. That, he said in another X post, would be the true danger.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001c3b6r0vpg4qwg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cKeeping innovation decentralized and accessible is the key to avoiding an unsafe and dystopian future where advanced AI capabilities are centralized and controlled by only a few hands,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DavidSacks\/status\/2095529332164735140?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">he said<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001d3b6rfqkv71v2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That kind of mindset is in line with Trump\u2019s efforts to stop states like California from imposing their own AI regulations in the absence of movement from Washington.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001e3b6r0ecesn4r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When efforts to ban state regulations stalled in Congress last year, Trump signed an executive action trying to do the same thing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001g3b6rwgkwakqt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Trump administration has so far viewed AI regulation more as part of a race with China over the technology than as an effort to protect humanity, as CNN\u2019s Hadas Gold explained in her recent story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/30\/business\/the-scramble-us-government-to-regulate-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018It feels a little like early Covid\u2019: The messy scramble to regulate AI.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh8am6001h3b6rpwqj60nb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The administration blocked export of some Nvidia chips to China, for instance, or temporarily delayed release of products to assess their impact on national security.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9j3l00223b6rac6qbm4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To those who see existential danger in AI, all of this may echo the nuclear arms race of the Cold War, when countries ultimately set aside differences to impose a series of treaties in the 1960s and beyond for Nuclear Non-proliferation, test bans, strategic arms limitations, and more.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvb00243b6rgu2aa98u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it\u2019s hard to imagine the Trump administration \u2014 or China \u2014 getting involved in any worldwide treaty effort, although Europe has tried to go the route of a treaty for AI regulations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvb00253b6rdf7qn18b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The threat posed by nuclear weapons still animates US foreign policy and is a main reason cited by Trump for his war on Iran.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvb00263b6r3mpu3eug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While the most dire warnings about AI have to do with the end of humanity, it is most potent as an issue motivating voters worried about AI encroaching in their backyards.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvb00273b6rkpa3lwfp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Americans are unnerved at unsightly data centers that power the hive mind of AI and which tech giants would have dot the landscape, impacting water quality, driving up energy bills, and swallowing up farmland.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvb00283b6rohec9oq5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The populist, pitchfork-style opposition to the massive construction projects has been the political story of the summer, crossing party lines and uniting people on the left and right, even as it confuses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/11\/politics\/trump-data-centers\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">policymakers like Trump<\/a>, who see dollar signs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvc00293b6rt5tu0i2k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            American voters cannot typically be accused of looking long-term.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvc002a3b6rb254cb8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They express concern about climate change, but seem to vote based on gas prices. They shudder at the $40 trillion national debt, but often vote for lawmakers who cut taxes and increase spending. And with AI, they appear to be far more motivated by concerns about data centers rather than the potential existential threat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmtxh9rvc002b3b6rrlq3al93@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But it\u2019s also possible that distaste for data centers reflects their role as the most obvious physical manifestation of generative AI.
