{"id":846979,"date":"2026-09-14T01:58:10","date_gmt":"2026-09-14T01:58:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/846979\/"},"modified":"2026-09-14T01:58:10","modified_gmt":"2026-09-14T01:58:10","slug":"auto-enrolment-brings-jump-in-private-pension-numbers-but-widespread-worries-remain-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/846979\/","title":{"rendered":"Auto-enrolment brings jump in private pension numbers \u2013 but widespread worries remain \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The number of people with  private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pension\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/pension\/\">pensions<\/a> has risen significantly over the past year, but less than half believe they will be able to afford a good standard of living in retirement, new research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/competition-and-consumer-protection-commission-ccpc\/\">Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC)<\/a> suggests. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">A report published today reveals that pension ownership has risen by 17 per cent since 2025, with the jump coming in the wake of the introduction of the Government\u2019s MyFutureFund auto-enrolment scheme earlier this year. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, confidence in retirement outcomes remains low, with just two in five sure  their pension will provide a good standard of living in retirement. Only one in three are optimistic that their pension savings will be able to keep pace with inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The research also highlights a significant gender gap in how men and women prepare for and think about retirement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">All told, 24 per cent of women have no retirement arrangements in place, compared with 17 per cent of men. Meanwhile, fewer women than men said they understand pensions.  A total of 49 per cent of women told researchers they had an understanding of pensions, compared to 63 per cent of men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Women are also more downbeat about their future prospects, with 32 per cent lacking confidence in the standard of living they will have in retirement compared  to 23 per cent of men. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cOur research shows that consumers avoid reviewing their pension statements and too often are not confident that their pension will allow a good standard of living in retirement,\u201d said the CCPC\u2019s director of financial education and Ireland\u2019s first financial literacy ambassador, Gr\u00e1inne Griffin. \u201cWe are encouraging consumers, particularly women, to review their pension, and remind them that they don\u2019t need to do it alone.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/2026\/09\/03\/more-than-29000-workers-opt-out-of-auto-enrolment-during-first-two-month-window\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More than 29,000 Irish workers opt out of pension auto-enrolment during two-month windowOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">She acknowledged that pension statements can be long, complicated and hard to understand and noted that it can be \u201cvery easy to just avoid them\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">However, she stressed that consumers do not need to \u201cbecome an expert\u201d, and can instead \u201cbook a short review with a financial planner or a financial adviser to check that your pension arrangements are suitable for both your current budget and your future hopes and dreams\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The study shows that as has been the case in previous years, almost two-thirds of consumers have never had a one-to-one conversation with a financial adviser about retirement, and among those who did seek advice, just under one-third did so through their employer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The research also highlights a low level of understanding of pension fees and charges among private pension-holders, with one-quarter reporting limited knowledge and 6 per cent unaware there were any charges associated with their pension at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph b-it-article-body__interstitial-link\">[\u00a0<a aria-label=\"Open related story\" class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/work\/2026\/08\/11\/big-employers-plotted-to-undermine-auto-enrolment-says-department\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Irish employers plotted to undermine pension auto-enrolment, says Government paperOpens in new window<\/a>\u00a0]<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cEmployers also play a powerful role in their employees\u2019 financial wellbeing,\u201d Griffin said. \u201cFor those consumers who have sat down with a financial adviser and discussed their retirement plans, our research shows that they\u2019re most likely to have been connected to that financial adviser by their employer.
