\n\tThe day after Yuval Abraham<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rachel Szor<\/a>\u2018s bombshell Israeli documentary\u00a0NAZA<\/a>\u00a0alleging the Israeli army targeted civilians in Gaza won the Special Jury Prize<\/a> at Venice, Israel<\/a>\u2018s Culture Minister Miki Zohar<\/a> announced that he would \u201cact immediately to revoke the Israeli citizenship\u201d of the directing duo.<\/p>\n

\n\tAccording to a translation provided by X, Zohar went on to call the film \u201cvile\u201d and the Venice Film Festival honor \u201cshocking.\u201d He continued, \u201cThe self-loathing that burns in the creators, who are willing to harm their homeland just to get applause from antisemites around the world, is inconceivable and constitutes a betrayal of the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe win of the vile film NZA [sic] at the Venice Festival is shocking. The self-loathing that burns in the creators, who are willing to harm their homeland just to get applause from antisemites around the world, is inconceivable and constitutes a betrayal of the state. This is exactly the reason I led the important reform in cinema so that Israeli citizens will no longer have to pay from their own pockets for the harm to IDF soldiers and the State of Israel. As Minister of Culture, I will act immediately to revoke the Israeli citizenship of these despicable creators for betraying the state.<\/p>\n

\n\tNAZA, a late addition to the\u00a0competition lineup in Venice<\/a>, received a record 25-minute standing ovation<\/a> at its premiere there. On Saturday night, it won the festival\u2019s\u00a0Special Jury Prize<\/a>. The film is directed by Israeli Jews\u00a0Yuval Abraham<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Rachel Szor<\/a>, two of the four directors of the\u00a0Oscar-winning documentary\u00a0No Other Land<\/a>. Abraham appears on camera, interviewing his subjects on the rooftop; they explain that \u201cNAZA\u201d is a Hebrew acronym used by the Israel Defense Forces to signify collateral damage (\u05e0\u05d6\u05e7 \u05d0\u05d2\u05d1\u05d9, or Nezek Agavi, per an interview included in press notes), in other words, an acceptable loss of civilian life incurred while trying to kill suspected Hamas militants. The film suggests the number of \u201cNAZA\u201d considered acceptable in each attack was elastic. In some cases, it would be under a dozen, but in others it could be 200 or even 500 people deemed permissible collateral damage, according to Israeli military personnel interviewed in the film.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Friday, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett criticized<\/a>\u00a0NAZA and its filmmakers, saying in a statement that that he is \u201cproud\u201d and \u201cdeeply grateful\u201d to the Israeli reservists and soldiers \u201cstanding between us and that next massacre.\u201d He added, \u201cTo portray them as perpetrators of \u2018genocide\u2019 is not courageous art. It is a cowardly blood libel.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tZohar has accused the Israeli film of betrayal before. In July, he released a video denouncing filmmakers who used government funds to criticize the country.<\/p>\n
