A magnitude-4.0 earthquake struck south of Pahala on Sunday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey\u2019s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.<\/p>\n
The earthquake occurred at 8 a.m. about 2 miles south of Pahala at a depth of 8 miles below sea level. Light shaking was reported across the Hawaii island, with more than 56 felt reports recorded within the first half-hour.<\/p>\n
The earthquake is not expected to cause damage to buildings or infrastructure. There was no apparent impact on Mauna Loa or Kilauea volcanoes.<\/p>\n
The earthquake occurred near the long-term seismic swarm beneath the Pahala area that has been ongoing since 2019. Earthquakes in the region have been documented as far back as the 1960s.<\/p>\n
Aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks.
