The Detroit Lions entered the 2026 season with a competition still brewing at left guard between Christian Mahogany and Ben Bartch. The Lions, as Dan Campbell hinted at, opted to start Mahogany in the season opener, but he wouldn’t last long. On Detroit’s second offensive possession of the game, Mahogany fell to the turf on a big Jahmyr Gibbs run. He would stay down for a few minutes before walking off under his own power.

After being examined on the sideline, Mahogany was carted to the locker room. The Lions officially announced him as questionable to return with a knee injury.

Bartch took over for Mahogany, as expected, and the Lions were able to close out the rest of the drive with a touchdown to take an early lead over the New Orleans Saints.

We will update this post with any news on Mahogany’s condition, including any change in his status or an update from coach Dan Campbell.

UPDATE: Mahogany was downgraded to out in the second half.

UPDATE 2: The Lions appeared to have gotten good news on Mahogany’s injury, despite it looking bad. Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters after the game that initial tests were negative, but he’s still being cautiously optimistic.

“We did do a scan that ended up being negative, so that’s good news, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods,” Campbell said. “Sounds like it could be more hip-ish maybe, but we’ll see.”

The Detroit Lions entered the 2026 season with a competition still brewing at left guard between Christian Mahogany…

[63
264323,4992,349,99
post-847595","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-nfl","tag-detroit-lions-injuries","tag-detroit-lions-news","tag-nfl","tag-sports
["GET
