An ordinary evening took a terrifying turn after a young man\u2019s minor injury left him fighting for his life against a notorious \u201csilent killer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luke, 35, was suffering a simple toothache when he began feeling unwell and feverish.<\/p>\n

The Queenslander had no prior medical issues, and initially didn\u2019t think anything of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think much of it,\u201d the 35-year-old said in a\u00a0Facebook post shared by QLD Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Luke, 35, landed in the hospital with sepsis after encountering a simple toothache. Queensland Health\/Facebook<\/p>\n

\u201cI assumed I was coming down with some sort of bug, some viral illness.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the horror was far from over.<\/p>\n

After a few days, his symptoms began to rapidly escalate into a tight chest and an unbearable burning sensation in his head, and that\u2019s when he knew something was \u201cseriously wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luke and his wife Jennifer rushed to Redcliffe Hospital where doctors soon delivered a shocking diagnosis \u2013 his blood was infected, and he had contracted sepsis.<\/p>\n

Luke ultimately underwent heart surgery. Queensland Health\/Facebook<\/p>\n

Sepsis occurs when the body\u2019s immune system overreacts to an infection<\/a>, turning on its own tissues and organs.<\/p>\n

Its early symptoms frequently mimic less serious illnesses, making it incredibly dangerous if left untreated.<\/p>\n

For Luke, the untreated dental infection had triggered infective endocarditis<\/a> \u2013 a severe infection that completely destroyed one of his heart valves.<\/p>\n

In the space of just a few days, he went from feeling slightly unwell to facing emergency open-heart surgery to save his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was told that without surgery I wouldn\u2019t live for much longer,\u201d Luke recalled, describing his terrifying ordeal in the intensive care unit.<\/p>\n

In the space of a couple of days, Luke had gone from being a bit under the weather to having lifesaving heart surgery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never felt so vulnerable or so broken as a human being,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While the surgery was a success, Luke is now facing a lifetime of daily medication, regular blood tests, and extreme caution around everyday cuts and bruising.<\/p>\n

Despite the grueling recovery, he remains incredibly grateful to the massive team of healthcare workers who kept him alive.<\/p>\n

His core message to others is to trust your instincts, don\u2019t ignore the signs, and always ask medical professionals: \u201cCould this be sepsis?\u201d<\/p>\n

Barriers to dental care<\/p>\n

Before landing in the hospital, Luke had no medical issues. Queensland Health\/Facebook<\/p>\n

Luke\u2019s brush with death struck a major nerve on Facebook, with hundreds of Aussies sharing their own terrifying close calls and demanding an overhaul of the public health system.<\/p>\n

Many commenters pointed out that the entire ordeal highlights a glaring gap in Australian healthcare.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis story is a prime example that dental should be included under Medicare,\u201d one user wrote.<\/p>\n

Dozens of others flooded the comments in agreement, arguing that incredibly high out-of-pocket dental costs risk pushing everyday to delay vital treatment.<\/p>\n
